Sarah was gone.
in retrospect, it seemed inevitable. Things had run their course, and frankly, now that it was over, Johannes had to admit that he was relieved. He loved her, he supposed, but love meant very little where they were concerned as a pair at this point. He had more than enough love to give elsewhere, to someone who was willing to accept it for what it was.
Teja would return. He could still smell her in his bed, on his clothes. He could taste her. One story was ending, and the other was just beginning.
Johannes only had to wait.

Herbert hung timidly around the doorway, watching his father. Johannes hadn't dressed again since the previous day, and was staring into the fire in his study.
"Vati..." he ventured, very quietly.

"Herbert."
He didn't look up.

Herbert anxiously skittered forward to his father's side.
"Vati, you're frightening me. You've hardly said anything to me since yesterday."

"I have had nothing to say," Johannes said dully.

Herbert knelt down beside his father's chair.
"Vati, please. I don't know what to do when you get like this. You know how terrible I am at- at things-"

Johannes turned to look at him at last. The corners of his swollen-looking mouth slowly curled up.
"It's all right, my boy. I've simply got a great deal to think about."

Johannes laughed and smoothed Herbert's hair fondly.
"I've been a little distracted, no more than that. You're one to talk, boy. How often have I had to remind you to put on trousers?"

"...many times, I suppose," Herbert said, averting his eyes in embarrassment.

"You don't need to take care of me, my boy," Krolock said gently. "That's my job. Where would you be now without me? Selling your blood in some basement still, no doubt."

"I know, Vati, and I'm grateful, but-"

"Please, Herbert. I have enough to worry about right now without your little ministrations."
He cupped his hand under the younger vampire's chin and tilted his face upward.
"We'll have to make time to do something together very soon, hmm? Just the two of us.'

"You never go out," Herbert grumbled. "You never do anything but stay here and brood- I don't think you even care about being happy, or about New York, or-"
