((I read it in a book somewhere. And it wasn't referring to the Peter variety.))
"Oh, I can show you down, if you do not know the way," *offered Nadir genially.* "It has been some time since I have seen Erik, as well. Not since he raped my daughter, anyway. Or maybe it was when I mailed him a slave girl. Anyway, one thing I do remember: we didn't part well. Maybe he's cooled off since then."

The Persian was struck dumb for a moment, blinking too quickly. "Things... have changed," he said in a strangled voice. Whatever else, he had not considered Erik capable of rape. Perhaps he did not wish to see him after all. "I am truly sorry for the pain he has caused your family," he said, a trifle formally. Nadir Khan could not know it, but as the Persian had appointed himself Erik's conscience, he currently felt himself very ill-used indeed.

"Well, I gave him just as bad as he gave," *said Nadir.* "And in the end, I doubt he's any the worse for wear."

If possible, his shock only increased. "I wonder that you speak so casually, both of the injustice done your daughter and the danger posed by this man. Can he not be stopped?"

*Nadir's eyebrows shot up.*
"...do you really think that the realms of conventional justice can touch him? It was go vigilante or go home."

"But if you left him, as you say, 'none the worse for wear,' what is to stop him from striking again? What did you do? How did you escape his wrath? Forgive my impertinence, but I have experience with this man that leads me to believe it would not be so easy."

"He seems to have taken it on the chin. It has been some time since we have had much contact with one another, and against all odds, I believe our friendship is at the same level it has ever been at."

The Persian shook his head.
"But you leave him free, to... to terrorize and rape at will?" he asked. "Beyond the reach of law or not, I will have to do something. I will have to confront him..."
This man, this Nadir Khan, had not made the promise he had. Did not shoulder the responsibility of Erik's actions. And as much as it weighed on him, he had to take it. It was because of him that Erik still lived.

*Nadir stepped closer to the stranger, his voice dropping to an intimate yet deadly level.*
"I have killed a man I counted as my enemy for the sake of one I loved, and it nearly destroyed me. Nothing could make me do anything irrevocable to the man who was once, and still is in many ways, my friend. I don't love anyone enough anymore."

The Persian did not back down.
"He was my friend once, too," he said, his voice quiet and even. "And I have no one in this world. But it is my duty to see he does no more harm. That which he does, and has done, is on my head. You could not live with such a thing on your conscience, could you?"

"Erik's conscience is his own. What kind of fool are you to bear his sins as well as your own?"

"The fool who let him live," he said quietly, his green eyes dark with remembrance. "My sins, and his, are therefore one and the same."

"Then why not kill him, now? Come, I can lead you to him, and we both know his ways. You could have it done, shortly," *said Nadir, holding out his arms in an expansive gesture.*

"I never said I wished to kill him," he said tersely. "I merely wonder at your ability to consider it all nothing."

"Well perhaps association with his vile cruelty as well as my own bitter streak have rendered me insensitive..." *Nadir shrugged.* "Would you have me be other than I am?"
