"But the man you speak of cannot be the one I knew," he said. "Or you could not have suggested such a thing; there is no reason for him to 'obsess' over one such as I. Nor could I expect his activities to be laid so open."

"Perhaps he has changed much, since you knew him. He has done so, as I have known him..." *mused Nadir.*

His eyes narrowed. "But how did you come to know him so well, sir?" he asked. "I confess, that is as much a mystery to me as any."

"I knew him long ago, in Persia."

"As did I," the Persian said, his astonishment well hidden. "But I do not recall you." And Erik was seldom out of my knowledge, if not my sight.

"Nor I you," *replied Nadir.* "...strange, isn't it?"

"I knew him well," he persisted. "I was under the impression that not much went on that concerned him which I did not know." This was not said in a tone of reproach or self-aggrandizement, for he felt neither proud nor burdened by the fact. It merely was.

"That is hardly surprising. Erik is not so very forthcoming, even with his friends or lovers."

There was a flicker of something in his eyes, but no other reaction showed. "I think we are only half speaking of the same man," he said. "Unless he is much altered. 'Forthcoming,' certainly, is not a word I would use to describe him." On the other hand, "friends or lovers" were not words he'd ascribe to anyone else, where he was concerned.

"This 'Verse place does things to a man," *said Nadir softly, his words heavy with portent.*

"I... see," he said, though he didn't really. "He is... much changed, then?"

"In some ways...yes."

"But not in essentials?" he guessed. The pieces that were falling into place refused to make any more sense. So there had been something to the faint recollection the blond man had inspired. But that could not be Erik.

((Did Erik appear to him as the O'Toole?))
*Not so much."

((No, he was... Erik. "The O'Toole" is awesome.))
"Ah." He fell silent for a moment, pondering the mystery of this. The sheer coincidence. And the odd resentment, that this man knew so much when he had considering himself Erik's only confidant. So much time had passed, and he had sworn off that relationship as ultimately the most damaging of his life, with little return. But it still needled.
"I should like to see him," he said quietly.
