In a countryside filled with huge manors and estates, the owners generally allowed for walks and rides to be conducted on properties without asking. It was under this unspoken rule that Evelyn Enjolras-Bass found herself on a pretty brown hunter, rambling across the countryside. Whatever her maid had called a "riding habit" was completely inappropriate for riding, and so she had worn her own tan jodhpurs, leather boots, and navy blue jacket.
Perhaps spending the summer in France wouldn't be such a bust after all.

Olivier was also out today, enjoying the sunshine and the respite from the house. It could get tiring, not the daily running of the estate--he actually didn't mind--but having to deal with Laurent's attitude and general behaviour was enough to tax the patience of even the greatest of saints.
Thus, he had made good on his little excursion, heading out on an older but favorite and reliable gray gelding.
He was cantering through the trees when he spotted a figure on horseback, and curious, he guided the horse closer. When he saw who it was, his expression broke into a glorious smile.
"Greetings, Evelyn!"

"Oh! Olivier!" She smiled brightly, slowing her horse. Said horse, a spirited chestnut mare, stomped a little, nervous at the presence of another person and another horse. Evie patted her neck soothingly.
"How are you this fine afternoon?"

"Doing wonderfully. Taking a bit of a break from the running of the household, a little catching of the breath. How about you?"

"Oh, just out riding. Girls... really aren't allowed to do much here, are they?"
Upon asking if she was allowed to help muck out the stalls, like any good rider would, she had been told her hands were too delicate and that she might strain a muscle. Similar explanations held true for swimming in the pond, playing some permutation of soccer with the people her age in the village, and just about every activity but reading, embroidering, or practicing on the pianoforte. The only thing left was riding.

"Well, I..."
He had a feeling he'd suddenly wandered out onto a shaky surface, and that if he stepped wrong he would set off an unwelcome chain reaction.
"I've seen...as much, yes. Though I've also heard of families being far more, ah, progressive."

"Well I am wearing pants." *She teased, laughing a little.* "New York is just... vastly different. I'm finding it a little hard to adjust."

"Ah...I've never been to New York. What is it like?"
He'd certainly gone on trips through continental Europe, but so far Olivier hadn't made the jaunt across the ocean yet.

"Oh, New York is wonderful! There's always something happening, something to do or see, always new people coming in and out... it's as if the city's alive. There's no place in the entire world like it."
While she had been born in France, she considered New York her true home.

"I would love to visit there someday. I've only traveled through Europe, and I'd love to stretch my horizons and go farther."

"No use in a person who won't look beyond the city walls, is what Maman says." She said, and it was clear she meant she approved of his desire to travel.

Plus, it'd get him away from Laurent. Always a welcome thing.
"Far and away I shall go, then. Ah, shall we continue on together? I was heading for the heather over there, unless you had another destination in mind..."

*She smiled.*
"Oh, nowhere in particular. Lead the way; I'm sure you know the terrain better than I do."

"The heathers, then!" He said, and with a boyish grin, urged his horse in an easterly direction, moving at a fast trot.

The high-strung mare spooked and jumped into a canter, quickly overtaking Olivier on his gelding. Evie, with an easy laugh, settled in to wait until the horse ran off her jitters.
"She's a bit antsy; you'll just have to try to keep up!" She called over her shoulder to Olivier.
