"Since geography does behave according to no known laws here, we could just as easily walk all night and encounter no suitable lodgings," Spock pointed out. "But the odds do seem in favor of your optimism. The geography so far has been remarkably accommodating, all considered."

"Too much so," Kirk agreed. "But, as we seem to be in much the same sort of neighborhood as before, I don't think we'll have to walk far." There was a pause, as they walked a little ways. "It's not exactly optimism, Mr. Spock. If, say, we ended up at the Bates Motel no matter which direction we walked in--if that were a possibility--it would imply something or someone wanted us there. Which is not an easy thought."

"Perhaps," Spock ceded. "I defined your confidence as optimism, however, because the motel is also what we want. If there is a controlling force here, it has been fulfilling our immediate needs, if not our longer term goals. We are unable to reach Lorien, and yet whenever we have been hungry, needed lodgings, or most recently, short-term employment in odd jobs, the environs have provided. If there is one, the controlling force does not appear to want us to starve, or sleep on the streets. It does appear to want us to stay in the general proximity."

"Any efficient slaverdriver would want the same basic thing," Kirk pointed out. "It's my experience that such provisions are only made when the providers want something. And that usually means it's something we don't want to give."
He did not, however, sound bitter. It was merely another adventure, so while he wasn't flippant it did not appear to be ruining his day.
"Still, in the absence of many other options, the devil we know... Perhaps it will give us an opportunity for a rematch, Mr. Spock."
((I got your email, which is awesome, but need to sleep. Will think/read/reply tomorrow.))
