Kirk thought about this for a split second. Then he smiled. "That's most efficient, Spock," he said, not at all dismayed by the fact that Spock had pointed out this obvious solution--that was what he had Spock around for. Not only the obvious solutions, of course, but Kirk recognized the necessity of multiple points of view. When those points were valid, that is. "I entirely agree. My suspicion is that the locals will have no notion of what we're talking about, but it would be useful to determine whether that's truly the case. And try to determine whether it's because they don't remember leaving, or because they haven't any restrictions." Kirk started looking out for signs or likely sites of employment. He thought restaurant work was unlikely, considering the particular qualities of the waitstaff they'd seen so far. Though it never hurt to try. Manual labor was somewhat more likely, he knew, in an antiquated culture with more definitive divisions of labor between the genders. Surely someone needed something moved. It was possible, too, that they'd come across a market where a great many vendors might need help with cleanup or delivery. ((You should probably not say things like that to me. Yes. This is what I did this morning instead of, you know, eating. Or writing. Or whatever. Also dunno where you want to go with the employment thing; if you're comfy detailed some of their search, go ahead, or if you're comfy glossing over some, do that. Otherwise I'll think of something.))

((HAHAHAHHA YOU WIN EVERYTHING. Thanks for that. I'm alright with glossing, but what should they do tonight? Because we kind of wrote it so they're out of money right now. But it doesn't seem likely Kirk will say, 'I know! I'll sell my ass!' tonight. In fact I think we need to work on motive for Kirk whoring in general. But couldn't they work an odd job tonight? Do we need to write about it? Also, maybe Kirk doesn't whore out for money. He could do it to save Spock. Like if Spock was in trouble or got arrested for being an alien or something. And Kirk hoes out to get him out. OMG so angsty.))

((No problem. It could be better, I know, but it was like 5 minutes I had or something. There could be a whole series. Insert him into various scenes with Shatner ACTING and nuSpock's face always the same.
And no, he's not going to sell his ass tonight, I was thinking about the odd job. And I don't see why we need to write it all out, but I guess we should say something. I mean we need to set it up and then say "and then they done work."
AND OMG THAT'S AWESOME. Because more angst! And then when Kirk gets in trouble or gets amnesia or whatever Spock will have all that stuff to deal with himself. Also they will be rich! I mean because he's that good. Though is getting arrested the best thing? Because then we can't play them off each other while it's going on.
Also if you ever wanted Sanjuro to meet them we could share that account. Just a thought.))

((Hahaha that would be an awesome series.
Ok what odd job? Can it be something where Kirk sweats and has to take off his shirt. OMG one of them should get hurt [but not a serious injury] while doing the job. If it was Kirk he'd be all 'it's nothing it's nothing'. And Spock would have to patch him up. Maybe that's why they decide they can't keep doing that job. What if their boss were abusive? Omg, K, what if they're in 19th c. Persia and they're at the palace or whatever and the sultana wants to torture Spock because she thinks he's a freak like Erik and Kirk is totally treated like royalty because he's alien in the 'good' way, i.e. the 'western' way, they're all fascinated with his golden hair and eyes and they also think he's super brilliant and they want him to be an advisor and everything, meanwhile Spock represents all the dark corruption going on in all the harems and torture chambers. ...This needs to be written.
Oh yeah that amnesia will be brilliant, omg.
I was thinking about that today, how if Spock is arrested they'd have to separate. Then I was thinking what if it's like Spock's being blackmailed or something, or they're both in prison but they're treating Spock worse because he's an alien or something, and they want to sleep with Kirk but he won't, but then does to spare Spock or something. OMG MY BRAIN.))

In the end, they were forced to find work. There wasn't a lot of time, and they didn't have a lot of choice, so naturally the work they found was moving crates of colorful produce more or less across the street. Kirk didn't understand the purpose of the work, but he did know it was somewhat satisfyingly physical. And, if he was forced to remove his shirt by the heat and exertion, well, that was just part of the game. He paused over a bunch of bright green watermelons to wipe the sweat from his brow, smiling unconsciously at the sheer joy of movement and the feeling of the cooling air on his skin.

The captain was sweating. Spock hardly ever did, even though he was part human. His mother had, in the Vulcan heat.
The sweat made his skin gleam, outlining the contours of each muscle. His skin was already golden from the sun, the color of his hair. And his eyes.
"You appear to be enjoying yourself," Spock observed.

((Is it a problem when I think Spock watching my own character is super hot? Oh, wait, of course not.))
"Of course I am," Kirk said with a grin. "Aren't you, Mr. Spock?" Spock wasn't sweating. Never sweat. Natural, he supposed, but odd too considering how warm his skin was whenever Kirk had had reason to touch him. He wondered if humans seemed somehow... dirty, in that way. He didn't think about this in quite so a negative a light. It didn't bother him. But he wondered, when Spock glanced at him like that, what he was thinking. "I like moving. You might say it's my form of meditation."

"There is little to enjoy in mindless labor," Spock said.
"What do you mean, meditation?" The meditation Spock knew involved complete silence, stillness, semi-darkness, and incense.

Kirk set another crate down and stretched.
"I wouldn't want to do it all the time," he clarified. "I'd go crazy. But from time to time, the simplicity of one's body moving, muscles working... There's a quiet to it, within the activity, that I enjoy. A point at which everything else drifts away. It's not the same as your version, especially not the Vulcan variety. But I'm not sure your meditation would do for me what a workout does. Just as my workout would probably seem pretty boring, to you."

Spock watched the captain stretching.
Maybe observation would provide some clue as to what Kirk was talking about.
"There are techniques used to center thoughts on Vulcan that involve motion," Spock said at last. He did not normally speak about Vulcan practices, but with Jim it felt different. "They are exercises that engage both mind and body. They are not the same as meditation, though not the same as what you describe, either. I would say they fall between the two, exhibiting 23.8% of the characteristics of meditation and 37.42% of the feeling you describe."
((Yes, I do make up my own fanon. Problem?
Meant to say this last night: I want to see a fic where Spock tries to teach Kirk to nerve pinch, and Kirk can't do it, and where Kirk tries to teach Spock to captain chop, and Spock can't do it.))

Kirk nodded.
"And the rest of the 38.78%?" he asked. "I believe I've heard something of this technique. Maybe you could show me sometime, Mr. Spock. Unless that would be some kind of breach of Vulcan trust, I'd be curious to see if their effect was beneficial to human physiology."
He picked up another crate and smiled. "Almost done here," he pointed out. He was never one for meditation. He'd tried, once or twice, on the advice of various, much calmer people. His brain refused to shut down, his body to keep still. Maybe that was his failing, but he knew himself well enough to play to his own strengths.
((Oh, and I meant to say no, that's no problem at all, it sounds hot.
And that fic would be awesome. Also has the meta-element of Shatner being unable to do the Vulcan greeting.))

"It would not be a breach of trust."
Spock did not add that it was not, because he trusted Jim. The Vulcan species kept its practices to itself, but it was not so insular that nothing could never be shared. After all, his father had married his mother.
Besides, with so few Vulcans left, Spock was highly aware insularity was a luxury they could ill afford.
"I will attempt to teach you after we are done here, and have gained our lodgings, if you are not too tired."

Kirk smiled. "I won't be. Thank you, Spock." He was aware of the privacy demanded by the teachings of Surak, and the trust placed in him whenever Spock disclosed any of his heritage. He valued that.
There was, perhaps, a mere half hour of work left before they were done. Their pay was roughly enough to keep them housed and fed, cheaply, for a few days at most. If they were careful. They'd have to work out something else, and soon.
"I suggest we walk back the way we came," Kirk said. "If my hunch is correct, we'll encounter the Bates far more quickly than it took to get here." He'd decided that going to Lorien had been ruled out by some other (he refused to say "higher") power.

Kirk smiled ruefully.
"Admittedly, very little," he said. "But it seems clear to me that however one gets to Lorien, this isn't it. And it's equally clear that the laws of physics--and geography--are not at work here. Therefore, something else must be. Either chance, or some pattern we've yet to figure out that wants us to be in some particular location. Either way, we'll either hit the Bates, or an equally suitable place."
