Instead of laying her hand on his shoulder like once would during the waltz, she swiftly seized the front of his tuxedo shirt, pulling him in abruptly. She made it obvious that she didn't appreciate being patronized.
Nothing directly followed the movement. She stood there for a moment, sizing him up as she kept his shirt firmly in her grasp.
"You're right," she said. "I want to be reimbursed for my night as well."

"Come, let's not make a scene. That would altogether ruin my perfect evening," he remarked derisively. "And as for your reimbursement...it shouldn't be difficult," he chuckled darkly, his laughter tinged with the faintest traces of increasing impatience. "There's a hotel just down the street."
He leaned into her hand.
"I could reimburse you all night long, in fact."

Sydney snorted. He was far too confident in his skills.
"We'll see," she said briefly, letting go of him gently.
She was aware of the hotel he was talking about: L'hotel Scribe, a lovely establishment conveniently close to the opera house. She had to qualms with it. But...
"No, your place," she said, making sure it sounded like the deal breaker it was.

He arched a brow at her and briefly wondered what the wench was up to. No good, no doubt.
The better when she fell.
"Very well," he responded at length. "My place. Where's your carriage?"

"And have my entire house talking about us? I don't think so. We're hailing a cab."

"Frankly, I'm quite taken aback, Miss Howard. You see, with your personality, I would've thought you liked causing unnecessary commotions. But as you wish. Hail away."
He took a moment to straighten out the creases in his shirt and coat.

She snorted. He was one to talk.
Hailing a cab wasn't that difficult. There were always a couple that made their way about the opera house just in case a unfortunate opera goer wasn't wealthy enough to own their own carriage. Sydney raised a hand, stopped one and got on without any assistance.

James openly leered at the young woman's back before hastily following suit and ascending into the cab as well. "To the North estate, then."
