*It had been a long time since Syd actually had the time to go out and an opera seemed like a wonderful way to start. She booked a box and watched Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera by herself, dressed in an elegant dark blue Victorian dress to fit into the crowd. The performance was excellent from what she could tell.*

((No idea if there's a contralto role in that, but whatever))
During the performance, Irene couldn't help noticing a woman in the audiance- she'd swear she knew that face...
No, it couldn't be her.
By the time it had ended, her curiosity was getting the better of her.

*Soon, the second act had finished and the curtain drew for intermission. She exited her box and picked up a flute of champagne. Finding that she was too preoccupied to converse, she drank by herself.*

"Sydney?"
Irene approached her quietly, in case she did not want attention drawn to her.

*If it weren't for the familiar voice, she wouldn't have turned around.*
"Irene?" *she said, beaming.* "I can't believe this!"

Happiness at seeing her friend again was mixed with the sudden realization that Sydney didn't know she'd been turned. Thank goodness she still had that choker on...
"Where on Earth have you been?"

"Everywhere, I guess," *she said with a bit of a laugh.* "My assignment took a little longer than expected."
*Her skills of deception were just as sharp if not sharper. Everything was absolutely believable.*
"And you?"

"I've been..."
Hurt more deeply than I had imagined was possible by a man in the shape of my lover, vampirized against my will, and transformed into an antisocial semi-recluse.
"...working."

"So, how's... everything?" *she said, being vague but meaning all the things she saw Irene go through before she left. Syd didn't think bringing it up three seconds after they met would be a good idea.*

"Well, I..."
She unconsciously rubbed her neck.
"I'm still alive."

"I meant..."
*She heaved a sigh.*
"Lecter. What happened to him? I didn't even get a chance to see that monster in jail or in court. The Brits didn't exactly have time to wait back then."

She's not going to like this...
"He's gone. Vanished."

*Sydney froze. If it weren't for her resolve to play into society like everyone else, she would've lost her temper.*
"What? For how long? How did it happen?"

"Quite a while back. There haven't been any murders in his style reported, and-"
She tried to laugh.
"And I'm afraid I haven't- I haven't had time to be involved in these things anymore."

*She frowned.*
"You're not a detective anymore?" *she asked, her mind still preoccupied on the news that Lecter had gone MIA.*
