"Presumably with me getting my money's worth. For what other reason would I purchase a ticket for the opera, my dear?"

"To thicken you little black book?" she said knowingly. "Innocence doesn't become you, Mr. North. I much prefer candor."
"I see that we're at an impasse."
The lights flickered at that moment. Intermission was over. Syd's posture relaxed and returned some what to the poised lady that entered the box earlier that evening. She knew he wasn't stupid. To try anything now when people would start showing up would be unwise.

"Oh, would you look at that?" he sneered. "Isn't that rather ill-timed?"
Still, without any urging, he righted their chairs, although he did request that Miss Sydney Howard resume her seat in a grand sweeping gesture which bordered on the mocking.

Sydney observed him then the crowd gathering below and around the box. The orchestra in the pit began to tune once more.
"I lied," she said, once again donning the accent. "I rather despise Tchaikovsky."
Then, after a mockingly low curtsy, she turned and calmly pushed passed the crowd towards the exit of the opera house. It wasn't all that odd for wealthy patrons to arrive late and leave early so she knew her intentions weren't too transparent.

The damn wench wouldn't dare take leave of his presence so soon--it was infuriating, especially following the recent turn of events.
He decided to chase after her as inconspicuously as he could.

She quickly collected her coat, ordered her carriage be brought swiftly out front and, before long, she was standing outside.
There was one question that kept invading her mind: what would she do if he came after her?

It wasn't long after she'd formed this thought that James had her directly within his sights.
He rushed at her before she ascended into her carriage and caught her wrist in a vice-like grasp, pulling her violently towards himself.
"Not just yet, my dear."

"Oi!" yelled her driver at the sight of his employer being handled roughly.
"Oliver," she said to him firmly, unfazed by his hand. "Drive back to the depot. I'll meet you later. Go on."
After a moment of hesitation, he obeyed and drove around the corner. Once he was out of sight, she turned her attention back to North.
Sydney looked down at his hand, silently observing the fingers that were tightly wound around her bare wrist. If she weren't used to pain, she might have thought it painful. Despite the tension, her arm remained relaxed.
There was something about this man that both repulsed her and intrigued her. Perhaps... that strange mixture of feelings was the reason why she didn't render him senseless in the opera box. Sydney couldn't help but feel as if this entire situation were some sort of science experiment. Whether it would result in an explosion or a fizzle, only time would tell.
"What's this?" she said mildly, as she returned her gaze to his face.
Why not play along? After all, she felt confident that she had perfect control of them both.

"I'm getting my night's worth," he replied, his demeanor reminiscent of that unsettling serenity which almost always precedes the most violent and tumultuous of storms.

A corner of her lips lifted into a contemptuous grin. His ego was bound to be sensitive. She couldn't help but wonder how he'd react to her turning up the flames on the already delicate situation.
"Begging doesn't become you either," she said in a low voice, referring snidely to the hand on her wrist. Her eyes stayed glued to his, unmoving and quite obviously unafraid.
She wasn't going to give him what he wanted... Especially, not this soon.

"Begging?" he snarled. "I should think that it'd be you begging for mercy after I'm through with you."
He had apparently forgotten--or rather, chosen to forget--the events which had transpired earlier that evening.

Syd leaned in close.
"I'm not your type," she hissed slowly, as if she were daring him.

"You'd be surprised. Everyone's my type, darling," he coolly muttered, closing what distance remained between them until their faces were nearly touching.

Her breath caught in her throat involuntarily. She quickly composed herself with a grin and kept the distance between them at a minimum.
"All I have to do is scream," she said quietly, letting him know that she had the upper hand, "And out little dance here comes to an end."

"But you won't...because you enjoy this little dance of ours far too much."
He caught her by the waist then with his free hand and twirled her slowly in a mock waltz.
