*The carriage pulled up and Raoul hopped out, holding an arm out to help Johanna down.*

*Johanna stepped out, a bit uncertain as to what the protocal was. She was spending the night with another man, so was it innocent or not?*

*He led her inside, where the housekeeper had awoken. She was a short, stout, matronly woman, with a shawl around her shoulders, a lace cap on her head, and a sputtering candle in her hand.*
"Monsieur le Vicomte?" *She asked without asking, looking at Johanna.*
"Louise, this is Johanna de Morangias. She'll be staying with us a spell... are there any rooms prepared?"
*Louise shook her head.*
"No, Monsieur, we weren't expecting guests but if you give me just a minute I'll have one ready."
*He nodded before turning to Johanna.*
"We can wait in the library."

*Johanna took it, sniffing*
"He was nice to me...I thought I could love him...I guess I ignored the warnings."

*He marveled a little at the feel of her hand in his. Hers was tiny and soft compared to his own. Combined with the fact that he didn't know what to do in this situation, it made him feel awkward and ungainly.*
"You're welcome here for as long as you're willing to stay." *He said softly.*

*Johanna looked up at him*
"I still don't know why you're being so kind to me."

"I like you." *He said simply.* "And I like helping people. I'm the one who doesn't know why you're putting up with me."
*He'd been compared to a puppy before: following to the point of obnoxiousness.*

"Put up with you?"
*She was a married- well, separated- woman. She knew she shoudn't do this. But she timidly kissed the hand Roaul had extended to her.*

"I've been told I can be... overenthusiastic."

*He didn't say anything for a while.*
"Would you like some brandy? I'd offer tea, but nobody's in the kitchen at this time of night."

"I would, thank you."
As long as I like...but I have to go somewhere eventually...

*He poured one for her and one for himself, getting up to do so and then hand it to her. He swirled the amber liquid in the snifter, looking at it but thinking about other things.*
