*Genghis's realization read only in his eyes, but there it was tumultuous and pained. His lips parted to speak but no sound came. He shut his eyes slowly and took a breath before his words fell as a whisper.*
"How could you? Why have you done this to me? Made me..."
...care for you...Why would you hurt me so?

*Emily felt a kind of cold, creeping shame and vague dread as she spoke, her tone dull and matter-of-fact.*
"I created her with no concern for what she might mean to you. She was for Nadir. He needed help. He needed family. He needed someone to love him, no matter what."
*She looked almost imploring.*
"Can't you see that?"
He has to understand. This is what I do. Without characters, without conflict, there is no story.

*Genghis was rigid in internal anguish, but he forced himself to listen. When she was done, he pursed his lips.*
"You have done this for him...provided something that I can not...could never...and I took her away from him."
*He turned his back to her to hide his misery.*
"Perhaps I am the monster he claims me to be."

"You are not! You are not!" *she cried, leaping to her feet. She set her jaw to the side.*
"They are no more perfect than I am--I would not have them so! They can be wrong, as any of us can be!"
*She fell silent, her mind a whirl of the sound of shouting and the ringing blows Genghis had landed upon his son at their last meeting.*
"Mitra is yet undecided," *she continued tentatively.* "I cannot think what to do with her." *She bit her lip and shook her head.* "Perhaps I should just...get rid of her. It may be more merciful than forcing her to decide."

*Genghis turned back to her abhorred. The pain was etched in every feature. His voice was terribly quiet.*
"You would...destroy my child? Unmake her on a whim? When she might be my son's redemption...or my own?"
*He pursed his lips to fight their slight tremble.*
"How can you do such a thing?"

"Would you have me leave her, then, to be torn between you both?"
*She looked at him, helpless to decide.*
"I should never have done any of this. If I had known..."
*She shut her eyes and sighed, shaking her head.*
"Of course, it's too late to go back."

*Genghis's face grew hard.*
"If there is any compassion in your heart, please...for the sake of both of my children, send her back to him. I cannot bear the thought of keeping them from each other. I will not cause them both more pain than I already have."
*He inhaled deeply.*
"Will you do this for me? I will do what you ask of me, should you spare my children further anguish. Just name your price."

*Emily rubbed her forehead.*
"...Mitra deserves more than Nadir can give her, though...she needs more. She needs you."
*She twisted the ring on the chain about her throat.*
...so I hear this thing can control minds, too. Brandi would kill me, but...God, I can't think of any other way to get Genghis' mind off of this...
*The ring shimmered as she looked at it, and she felt a strange tight chill around her heart. She accepted her eventual corruption by the ring as the price she must pay to save these people from themselves and her own thoughtless machinations. She shut her eyes and drew on the power of the ring. ((I'm not sure how the ring works, exactly, so I'm making it up. But wikipedia did say it could control minds.))*
"Please, forget about this," *she whispered.*

*Genghis just stared at her hard, not fathoming what she had done. Slowly, the creases in his face lessened and his face grew unfeeling and stoic. He tilted his head for a moment and turned back to sit before his page. Then his brow furrowed again slightly as he picked up the quill.*
"Where was I? Not too far...they better arrive soon, I will not be able to bear her tediousness."
*He finally paused and looked back to Emily, indifference in his voice.*
"Was your day productive? Have you found my small collection useful at all?"

"It's fine, thank you," *she said calmly, letting go of the ring and shutting the book she held, closing her eyes for a moment as a wave of nausea swept over her.*
It was such a small thing...it's not like I'm Sauron or anything...why is the corruptiong setting in so quickly?

*Genghis nodded.*
"I am glad then. Do let me know if there is anything I can fetch for you."
*He continued with his letter.*

*Emily nodded slowly as the full import of what she'd just done hit her.*
I can control his MIND. I could--
*She flushed.*
...and if I did, I'd be no better than he once was.

*Genghis finished up the letter.*
Now I just need to know where to send it.
*He stood gracefully.*
"Excuse me, I will return shortly."
*He made his way out to the tent where Snow White was bound, ducking into the tent and walking up to her calmly.*
"Princess...where would you have me address the ransom? I would like to see this matter done with as quickly as possible."

*Emily had gotten to her feet and followed Genghis into the tent where Snow White was. She bent and took a knife from her boot and cut the ropes at Snow White's wrists and ankles.*
"Hey, uh, Miss Princess? ...You've apparently got a real attitude problem, but if you promise to try harder to be nicer next time..."
*She let the sentance hang.*
