((You're just getting me back for the pancakes...))
*Genghis looked up to her, slightly confused by the gesture. Was she being nice? He took one cautiously.*
"Thank you. What have you been working on?"

((Damn straight I am.))
*Emily glanced down at the trashy Kat Martin novel she'd secreted behind the heavy and studious-looking leatherbound copy of the Decameron.*
"Er..."

*Genghis didn't look up from his letter as he spoke calmly.*
"How is it that you manage to be both strong-willed and agreeable? I have found that many women that wish to be strong are merely...vexing. Rude."

"You catch more flies with honey," *she said flatly, with a shrug, trying to discreetly shove the romance novel under the edge of the cushion she was sitting on as she shifted the Decameron in her lap to make it look like she'd been reading it all along.*

"There is truth in it..."
*Genghis's brow creased and he looked over his shoulder to her.*
"But so few women are that way. I do not understand it."

"I don't pretend to understand men any more than you get girls. Actually, I think most people are slightly whack-o, regardless of gender."

*Genghis turned back to his letter.*
"Perhaps if she is here for a while, you might impart some of your wisdom on the princess. I would like to see her bettered, if only for quieting her fiery tongue. I have never seen a princess so unrefined."
*He paused and continued softer.*
"If you can force me to see reason, I have no doubt that you can help her."

*She smiled half-heartedly.*
"You have such faith in my so-called abilities. I don't understand it."
*She shook her head.*
"And fiery tongues have their uses. I wouldn't stamp that out of her. She may need it at some point. But there's a time and a place for everything. Sounds like she needs some discretion more than anything."

"Ah! Yes. That is it."
((Sorry, that was totally the King of Siam in my brain.))
*Genghis smiled slightly.*
"That is all I ask. I would like things to be...civil. If I am to elevate myself. I may be a barbarian, but that does not mean I wish to deal with constant rudeness."

((Do you WANT me to start channelling Deborah Kerr?))
"You're not a barbarian," *she said, turning a page of her book.* "I think you're kind of classy when you're not trying to be some super-pimp warlord. Killing people is just general cruelty, but not barbaric. And barbarianism is, more often than not, a term assigned to a people by an alternate ethnic or cultural group so assured of their own superiority that all others seem lacking. It's simply a matter of perception."

*Genghis paused for a moment.*
"Was that a compliment?"

"...well it wasn't an insult."

Good enough.
*Genghis nodded at the page.*
"I just..."
I want you to approve of me.
"I value your constructive criticism. I am trying to keep an open mind."

"Likewise, I'm sure," *she said.* "It's certainly a learning experience."

That sounded even more like a compliment.
*Genghis turned back with a hint of a smile.*
"I am glad you are contented."
*He paused a moment, brow drawing up slightly.*
"Have you been sleeping better? I know that it must be a large change for you."
