*She nodded.*
"I'm better, now. A night without sleep paralysis is a good night."

*Genghis turned completely to her, his brow creased in concern.*
"Paralysis? How do you mean?"
My son better not be acting up again.

"It happens sometimes, when I'm stressed or sleeping irregularily or something. Like, you know sleep-walking? It's the opposite of that--your mind awakes while your body remains asleep. You can't move or speak, and you hallucinate...you see, hear, and feel things that aren't really there. From what I know, the hallucinations tend to take on the form of whatever it is you fear most."

*Genghis looked more perplexed.*
It could be a visitation as well.
"If...it is not too private...what is it that you saw?"

"A demon sat crouched on my body. He stared at me and stroked my face and wanted to consume my soul," *she said casually.+*

*Genghis stood suddenly, surprising himself. How could he do this? He had promised! The tendons of his neck strained in his agitation. He turned away from her to hide his frustration, but his voice was a low growl.*
"And this demon...could you see his face? Did you recognize him?"

*Emily stared at Genghis, her voice suddenly a dry whisper.*
"Um...he had yellow eyes. He kind of looked like a cat, or a midget with a cat's head...about four feet tall."
*She swallowed.*
"Sorry. It's a stupid thing to be scared of. A cat-midget demon."

That doesn't sound like his style. Perhaps this is something else.
*Genghis turned back to her, cupping her cheek gently and tracing his thumb over her soft skin. His words were almost tender.*
"One cannot control what one fears. They are irrational by nature."

"Mine are all too rational...born of too much contemplation." *she said quietly.* "At times I think I have created them entirely."

"Perhaps you are ruled too much by your head then."
*Genghis gazed at her for a long moment before dropping his hand and turning away.*
"My daughter has accused me of the same sin."

"She knows it's a problem," *she said, turning back to her book and trying to find her place.*

*Genghis paused in thought, swallowing before answering.*
"You have...spoken to her about it? About me?"

*Emily looked at him solemnly.*
"No. I haven't."

*Genghis looked back to her shrewdly.*
"Do you...read her thoughts?"

*She met his gaze fearlessly and raised her chin a notch.*
"I control her, too."
Now despise me if you dare.
