**NEW DAY**
It was getting dark and although she had chose to go out on her own, she knew Paris hadn't changed. It was her last night and she wanted to see a few places without the constant watch of her family.
Lifting up the bread basket she'd brought she thought about her family and how much she'd miss them when she was back at school. Now that her father had a telephone she knew she'd at least get to call, when before it would take weeks to get mail.
She also thought about her power, she'd been avoiding the conversation with her father for days. She knew he was aware of her cognitive abilities, the auras and base level mind reading. What she hadn't told him was that if she concentrated enough she could solidify her own aura, turning it in to a barrier, for a short time.
He'd be afraid for her and she knew it and he'd warn her against ever using it and she would.
As she lost herself in thought she found herself moving without really paying attention.

Alex had started one of his usual wanderings through Paris, thinking about Louis' abrupt departure as well as the fact that Daniel seemed to have disappeared (not that he was complaining). He often walked through the less savory parts of town, since it was both easier to hide in and also to draw in attention. The seedy citizens here always underestimated him, thinking him nothing more than the teenage boy he seemed to be. At the same time, he was also safe, since those who were in the know about vampires knew to avoid him. The few that were stupid enough to start trouble quickly learned their mistake. Because of all this, he was good at spotting people who obviously had wandered in from a better area.
"Are you lost, miss?"

Marie quickly turned around and steeled herself.
When she saw a boy, not much older than her, she loosed but not by much. His aura read friendly, but it was off somehow.
"Yea, I got all caught up in my head and forgot to make a left, or a right, or turn- anyway yea. Bloody lost."

"You need help? This isn't a good place to get lost in."
Huh. That was interesting. She had a...well, the best way he could think of to describe it was a presence.

"Yea no kidding" she squinted in the low light to better see him "you don't look like you belong down here either."

"No, I know I stand out. Everyone sees a kid and thinks it's time to pick on them."

"You an orphan?" She asked taking a few steps toward him.

"Yeah. I have been for a while now."
Unfortunately, it was the truth. Not long after Louis' vanishing he'd learned that they'd been killed in a car accident. Well, only technically he was an orphan in that both his parents were gone, but he wasn't in the habit of telling random people that he was a vampire and oh yeah, actually in his 30s.

She gave a sad smile "Do you have a place to stay for the night?"
There was her father again, she's the lost one and she's offering a boy she just met a place to sleep.

He blinked in surprise.
"Oh, no, thank you. I sleep in one of the empty rooms in the opera house."

"Well there are quite a few of those" she laughed "so do you know the way back to downtown or whatever?"

"Sure, I think so. We could walk together--it'd be safer that way."
Well, safer for her, anyway. It'd be hard for someone to start trouble with a vampire around.

She raised her eyebrow with a smile "Not always."
Marie realized that made her sound dangerous, but she wasn't going to change it now.

"Okay, mostly," he said, giving her a wink.
He gestured to their right.
"I think that way's the right one."

"Cool."
As they began to walk she made a quick decision and looked in to his mind. She was still honing this particular skill, but what she got out of it made his aura make sense.
Her composure didn't change "I'm Marie by the way."
