"Can't you? Because it seems to me Daniel, that you have... thus your current situation."

"Exactly. Anyone I do I destroy them or...they destroy me." His voice was barely a whisper now, impossible to hear unless you were a vampire.
He hadn't meant to say the second half of that. But then...not dealing with any of it was what had caused this breakdown, wasn't it?

He almost rolled his eyes, it was almost like listening to himself. Although Louis knew full well how pathetic he sounded.
"Destroy?"

"Yes."
He glanced up at Louis, Daniel's expression completely flat in spite of the tears.
"I didn't know what I had. Because I didn't know how to deal with it. And instead of actually helping her or making things better, I just added to the bullshit. I'm surprised she didn't go crazy sooner."
He laughed humorlessly.
"Not crazy because of me. But I could've prevented that, I bet. If I hadn't been so...well...me."

Ahh...
"My brother committed suicide" he replied cold in the face of Daniel's tears, it wasn't normal for Louis to act this way, and he knew it, but he couldn't help it and he didn't know why "...because of me."

"She's dead. Well, but not by her own action...I did it."
Though, recalling her words, it had almost been as though some part of her had actually been begging him to.

Louis closed his eyes and didn't say anything.
He found that if he replied, before Daniel had a chance to explain himself that it wouldn't matter.
"Why did you kill her?"

He still spoke in that very quiet voice.
"It was a mercy. She...she wasn't herself anymore. The madness ate up who she was until there wasn't anything left."

"Than why do you cry?"
The truth was Louis was beginning not to care, he had seen real fear tonight, he had seen a man shaking in terror because of him, it for the first time, brought to light what he was.

The truth...
He'd made so sure he wouldn't give voice to it, nor even think it at all. Because once that word was called up, there was no recalling it. But then...it was why he was so upset, wasn't it? Because of her, yes, and Armand, even Armand after all this time.
He felt strangely calm when he finally answered.
"Because I loved her."

Now he wasn't expecting that, not once, in the short time that he had known Daniel, had he ever though of the man as the loving type.
Not even in the books that he had written.
"My lord man."

"I know."
He heaved out a shuddering breath. "I know."

"And there was no saving her? No help that she could have gotten...?"

He shook his head. It was strange, saying just those four words seemed to have lifted something off of him--he felt almost lighter.
"She was too far gone by then."

Louis set his hands behind his back and sighed "Than you are wasting your energy in mourning her."
