Ingrid was staring up at the ceiling from her swing with a frown when Adrian entered the room, hanging up his coat on the rack by the threshold as he did so.
"You know, your face is going to stay like that if you don't stop that," he commented dryly as he reached in and gathered her up into his arms. Ingrid made a small, tentative sound of protest, but was more or less immediately preoccupied with turning her fluffy blond head back and forth to look around the room from this new perspective.

Dan was face deep editing his latest piece about the migratory habits of sea birds when Adrian came in "Is that what happened to you?" He chuckled slightly over his shoulder.

"You see, I know what I'm talking about," Adrian said dryly, looking very seriously at the baby before glancing up at Dan. "Evening."

Dan turned to reveal a man who had hastily buttoned his shirt wrong and threw a sweater over it. A tiny coffee stain on his chest.
"She is not interested in Great Shearwaters at all."

"Have you been running ideas out loud to her?" Adrian asked, smiling fondly.

"Yes" he sighed dramatically "but all I get is a whole lot of well- thpppp."

"Well, good for her. That's rather advanced for her age."

"Yes but I can just replace facts with spit noises can I?" He stood up and stretched. He make a beeline to kiss Ingrids head and Adrian's cheek before heading toward the kitchen for a cup of coffee.

Adrian followed, leaning against the counter. Ingrid made a faint sound of distress at the changing light and he obligingly shaded her eyes.
"Well, you can't expect her to provide good literary criticism right away, even with me for a grandfather," he said. "You'll have to wait until she's at least six months old for that."

Dan laughed as he poured the coffee "It'll probably be that long before I finish it, if my current speed is any indication."

Ingrid yawned and tried to turn her face inward away from the light.
"Here, could you get a bottle going? I think she's getting ready to go down."

"Oh sure" he set his coffee down and started mixing a bottle. After a few moments he grabbed his coffee and clicked the kitchen light off.

Adrian sat in the living room with Ingrid nestled firmly in the warm crook of his good arm; he accepted the bottle from Dan and gently brought it to her mouth. Ingrid's eyes fluttered shut as she fed, a little fringe of light brown lashes on plump baby cheeks.
"She looks like her mother," Adrian commented. "I was wondering which side she would favor."

"She's got plenty of time to change, but I think you're right."
Dan gently sat down next to them and sipped his coffee.

"She has Meg's nose, at least, the lucky little beast."
Quitting smoking again had caused Adrian to gain back a good five or six pounds so far, but his face remained sharper and leaner than it had been even a year previously. Even with a lapful of baby and wearing a sweater, he cut a rather spare figure on the end of the couch, hair now predominantly silvery and cut carefully but inexpertly short, his head bowed solemnly over his granddaughter.
