Adrian released him, looking momentarily confused but moving on from it. He allowed himself to drop into the water again.
A dog was barking in the distance.

Dan moved over to the side of the pool and lifted his arms to hold himself there. Just watching Adrian with a smile.

"Sorry," he admitted. "I was just terribly sore-"

"You'll get no complaints from me" Dan stretched his back and looked up toward the ceiling.

Adrian pushed his own hair back from his forehead, to rather severe effect.
"How long have you felt like this?"

"Hmm?" He looked back down to Adrian with a curious look.

"As blissfully over the moon as you seem to be for me."

Dan didn't immediately respond. In fact, he didn't say anything.
As of late, because of everything, it hadn't been easy to love Adrian. No scratch that, it had never been easy to love Adrian. But what was easy was to be attracted to him, to want him. Dan had been in lust longer than he'd been in love, he was sure of that. So physically it was easy. Mentally he was a worrier and it was easy to worry about Adrian; the man was suddenly aging, the stress of a hard life spent finally catching up to him scared Dan to death. He imagined this and the comfort of common folk was what love meant.
But even still, as much as Dan worried and as much time as he spent angry he still felt a slight euphoria in his company. He still felt comfortable.
He tried to find a response that conveyed those emotions, instead Adrian just received a slightly puzzled, but mostly concerned face of a man caught off gaurd.

Adrian wasn't muddled enough to not be able to read that expression.
"Sorry I asked," he said, holding his hand up in preemptive surrender.

"No, I-" Dan stumbled and laughed "it's just, that's a complicated answer for a very easy question. I'm not sure quantum computing could unscramble the complexities I've created for myself."
He smiled, trying very hard to clear up his mind "I was only asleep less than an hour ago so let's make the simple answer a long time."

"If it wasn't for the way you were looking at the girl I might have thought you and Rorschach-"

"Rorschach?" Dan furrowed his brow. It had never occurred to him that his relationship with the other vigilante would have been thought of as anything but professional. "Really?"

"You were fiddling with his collar. Holding him back by the elbow-"

"I-" Dan had to recall that particular meeting again and laughed "I did tend to fuss with him, but if I didn't he'd have punched everybody I knew. I guess I didn't realize what it looked like. I was just trying to keep him from turning the place on its ass."

"Thank God we had Blake to rise to the occasion instead," Adrian said dryly. "I think I had tinnitus for three days from that sound Nelson made."
