"Look, someone has to wait downstairs for the midwife," said Adrian. "I'm going to do that, and then I'll be right back up, I promise."

Dan rubbed Megs back and nodded toward Adrian "Of course, we'll be here."
He was so scared for the poor girl, he couldn't even begin to imagine the pain she was in.

It was another twenty minutes before Adrian returned with an unfamiliar middle-aged woman in tow, and another six hours before there was finally a hollow-sounding, crackling little cry from the bottom of the bed. By now the room was full of early morning light and the bed was soaked, with Meg's hair spread up over the pillow behind her. Various available flat surfaces had been filled with necessary monitors, scales. The midwife took the baby toward a small basin and wiped her off.
"Here she is," the midwife said as she brought forward a small lump consisting of a scowling, tomato-red face peering accusingly from between a pink blanket and a small knit hat. "A beautiful little baby girl."
Beautiful was something of an overstatement. Adrian looked at Meg, who blinked dazedly before shaking her head, and then looked at Dan.
"You've got both arms," he said. "I'm afraid I'll drop her."

Dan swallowed hard and nodded with full understanding. He gently placed his arms in the correct position and shook slightly as the midwife laid the baby girl in his arms.
He felt hot tears on his face and didn't care to hide them. The room felt still as he smiled wide and whispered "Hello beautiful."

"You'll want to get the birth certificate turned in on Monday," the midwife said to Adrian as she positioned a shallow plastic pan between Meg's still-spread legs to deliver the afterbirth into. "All right now, hon, you're in the home stretch..."
Meg looked anxiously at Adrian.
"I'll draw you a bath, all right?" Adrian said quickly."As soon as you'very finished, you can relax in the bath. You've been very brave, Meg."
Adrian looked over at Dan, almost as an afterthought, and then stopped where he stood. The baby was whimpering anxiously, and very quickly began crying again.
"She's probably hungry," said the midwife. "Do you have anything frozen?" "She wasn't due for another two weeks," Adrian pointed out.
The midwife looked up at Meg.
"Do you feel up to it, hon?"

Dan cradled the baby like he'd practiced and shh'd her with a smile.
He looked up at Adrian with a look that said be patient and smiled "We'll be okay here" he looked back down at the little girl in his arms and found himself humming a nursery rhyme he hadn't thought of in years.
