"If you leave now, you'll probably be given the benefit of the doubt as a victim, not-"
He paused.
"I don't want to see you in her position."

"He hasn't victimized me," she said, appalled. "But we've only been together since January, and we were engaged.... I don't think it would look good, and... I don't... I don't know how he'd react."
It was the first time she'd really said she wished that she could leave, and it filled her with guilt and sadness, as well as a growing amount of relief.

"It would look better than leaving him once he's established himself. His human paramour, unable to withstand attachment to a god..."
Adrian moved to sit on the nearest chair. This would obviously take a while.
"Suppose, for one, they decided he would indeed be useful to keep tabs on. Jon's quarters are still standing, and I don't imagine they'd have much reluctance about shutting you in there with him to placate him-"

"Stop it-" she said in panic. "And Loki would never suffer confinement, especially from the government. He has a lot of contempt for it; I coached him out of talking about it when we were in the mayoral race."

"I'm sorry," he said, pinching his nose again. "I don't mean to be cruel, but I'm relying on the only precedent we have for these... gods-and-monsters kinds of circumstances."

"Thank you for noticing," he said, with an exhausted - sounding laugh.

"I'm not concerned about being held by the US government. I don't think there's anywhere on Earth that could hold Loki against his will, technologically or magically. Maybe Latveria could give him a run for his money."

"Well, possibly," said Adrian, very carefully, "but that doesn't help you much."

"I don't know if anything can help me," she said, not self-pityingly, but sort of resignedly. After a moment, she shyly added, "It helps to have told someone. I... well, aside from David, and Megan, which... did not work out, I haven't really had any friends. Well, I'm seeing a vampire. I'm not seeing him - but he's probably worse than Loki, so I'm grateful he is only trying to be a friend."

"A vampire?" Adrian repeated dubiously.

"His name is Graf Johannes von Krolock," she said, pronouncing his name properly as usual. "But he's dropped all the aristocratic trappings because I think he wants to look less like a predatory relic, which doesn't work very well."

"I didn't even know they still came in that flavor," Adrian said. "I'm almost impressed."

She gave a short, unsettled laugh.
"Well, you know, it takes financial resources and a place to stay to maintain immortality without losing your mind to starvation or getting murdered."
