"...I wanna say 400?"

"Vampires don't live that long by being wonderful people," he conceded darkly.

"Johannes has more or less said the same. He's... not forthcoming, but in that, at least, he hasn't been deceptive. Though he might be, if he thought he could get away with it. I don't know how smart I come off. There are studies that back up the notion that women with higher-pitched voices are taken less seriously..." She thoughtfully trailed off.

"On the other hand," he teased, "you do wear glasses."

"Oh, glasses stereotypes aren't that accurate. Men do make passes, which is very unfortunate."

"What do I know, I'm only a blond," Adrian said flatly, before laughing despite himself.

She couldn't help but also laugh, a bit more shyly.
"Do people tell you blond jokes?"

"Not so much anymore," he admitted. "There were far more of them years ago; I imagine they were easier to direct at a perceived youth."

"Stop me if you've heard this before," she said, slipping off her sandals and curling up on her side on the couch, holding a cylindrical pillow between her legs and against her stomach for comfort's sake. "A brunette and three blonds go over the side of a cliff. They manage to hang onto the side of the cliff, but none of them is able to climb up. They shout for help.
"It so happens a man drives by in his car and sees them all dangling. He gets ropes from his car to pull them up with, but he realizes he only has three ropes, and will only be able to save three of the women.
"The brunette turns to her friends and says, 'I am willing to give up my life to save you blonds,' and the blondes applaud."

He laughed in a decidedly socially polished way.

"I know being literal ruins the joke, but I feel it's necessary to point out how unrealistic this joke is, and would especially be if you were one of the blonds mentioned, as we all know you would climb up the cliff. Pure dumb muscle," she said brightly.

"I don't know about that," he said. "I might find that task to be a bit of a handful as of late."

There was a short pause and abrupt ungraceful laughter.

Adrian laughed too.
"It's all right, you can-"

She laughed a little longer, but shyness prevailed. When it subsided, she said, teasing very gently, "Oh, I see. You'll pretend laugh when I tell a joke, but laugh for real at your own jokes."
