"She chose the same life we did, Dan."
It was a statement, not an accusation or a deflection.

"But she didn't have to!" He clenched his fists "I pressured her, I pushed her, she should never-" he caught himself before he let everything go. "She should have stayed with Howl where her magic would have been safe, where she would have been-"
He laughed "So fucking melodramatic."

"Magic is an infamously irregular science, Dan," Adrian said, with a concern frown. "It's likely that she would have developed the same... issues with control."

He turned to face Adrian "It's all moot anyway" he replied, sounding defeated "isn't it? It's what if's that we can't change, we can't change the fact that I-I-I took a beautiful young woman who learned everything she knew from a book and threw her to the wolves" he was making this about him and he hated himself for it. He pointed at the door and shook "She's ready to die Adrian, and- and I think she may have tried this morning! I don't know how to help that, I don't know how to fix that!"

"You can't fix that, Daniel, all right? You can't tear out pieces of yourself to patch whatever she's lacking now-"

"And why not?!" He exclaimed "it's our fault! I've spent my life trying to save lives and now I-I-I've-" he was just stuttering over his words now; he slowly sat on the bed and put his face in his hands.

Adrian sat beside him and sighed.

For a long time he just sat there with his face in his hands. Unable to cry, unable to speak, unable to feel anything besides unwavering guilt and sadness. In his mind he didn't deserve to feel anything less.
Sighing he finally lifted his head and stretched his back. "Adrian-" he exhaled but couldn't finish his thought and sighed again.

"We rushed into believing everything was solved," he said gently, pushing a lock of Dan's hair away from his forehead. "That's all."

He leaned his forehead against Adrians hand. We rushed a lot of things, Dan thought as he closed his eyes "Hell."

Adrian leaned his forehead against Dan's, pushed his hands through Dan's hair and held the back of his head.

Dan could feel tears finally begin to well up in his eyes, but held them back. For a moment he felt calm, like everything was going to work itself out, he knew it wouldn't but he was going to hold on to that feeling for as long as he could.

"And you shouldn't pin your life on me, either," Adrian said softly.

He was right of course but Dan said nothing. He'd lost himself in Adrians circus and he knew that now, but he made a promise, he wasn't leaving him.

"And it's only a matter of time before you won't even be able to pretend I'm still the same person you noticed at the meeting all those years ago. Things are changing, Dan- I'm changing."
