He opened his eyes finally and with a smile replied "Its been an odd morning."
Dan moved back in to the room toward the bed and sat down on the end, removing his glasses he rubbed his face trying to collect his thoughts.

Dan released a little "Ha" and pressed his palms in to his eyeballs; he was starting to get a headache.

"All right, " he said. "What's happened."

Dan didn't respond at first, he just kept pressing his palms in to his eyes.
He'd hoped Adrian would just keep talking, keep the conversation light. He couldn't keep his mind straight and everything showed up on his face. He'd never been very good at keeping secrets Don't tell anyone Dreiberg... I won't I promise!... he always got found out, the boys always knew he knew.
He couldn't look at Adrian "I- Megan she-" he shook his head "-what happened to her? How did she get this far Adrian? This morning I found her- no that doesn't matter, god I should have been there."

"What- oh, Christ," he groaned, instantly pinching the bridge of his nose by force of habit. "I should never have taken her on like that-"

"Like what?" He looked up, he didn't want to have this conversation. Neither of them wanted to have this conversation. "Adrian she was never like this, even after everything she was never like this."

"Adrian!" Dan grasped the edge of the bed with both of his hands and closed his eyes again, he felt like a child for a moment, arguing with his father "Megan is my friend and I abandoned her and now, now at the risk of sounding juvenile I am scared for her and I have no idea how she got this far. You do, you do though because you were there-"

Adrian sighed.
"We proved to be toxically incompatible people, Dan, there's not much more to say. That and, if I'm to be totally honest, I believe the girl was a little in love with me."

Dan stayed silent. He remembered when Megan first came in to contact with Adrian and his assumption was probably not too far off.
He felt glued to the spot, unable to move but wanting dearly to leave.
"Oh hell."

"For once," he said, with a bitter laugh, "I didn't encourage it. She was ready to go to bed with me in Russia a few months ago..."
He smiled unhappily.
"In truth, I think refusing her was the only decency I've shown her in a good long while."

Dan looked up at him with dark eyes and shook his head. "I wish I could have saved her-" he didn't have the heart to say from you .

Adrian caught the implication anyway.
"From me. Yes, I know."

Dan looked away horrified- he could feel his eyes shaking; for a moment he feared and an astigmatism.
He couldn't save any of them, they'd all been victims of each other and this toxic environment. He'd willingly subjugated himself to all of this, he tried to take their burdens, he tried to take their fears but he wasn't enough.
Inadequate that was how he felt, how he'd always felt. What a miserable feeling.
"Adrian I'm so disappointed" he whispered "in all of us. We aspired to greatness and where did it get us? We're so fucked up its bleeding out on to the innocent."
He stood up and went to the dresser and leaned against it, his back facing Adrian. This is where love brought him, he wondered where it would take him next.
