The subway was as atrocious as ever, but Teja buried her nose in the perfume-scented collar of her jacket and thought on her day. It had been a rocky week to be sure - the bombshell with Loki, making up with Loki, Loki leaving, and now this pleasant day spent with Graf von Krolock - but as of this moment, things were looking up.
It was dark by the time she got home, and she wanted nothing more than to change into a light nightie and watch something on television or whatever - anything to keep her mind off of the empty house or her current confused relationship.
Things had been going so nicely... well, maybe things would return to that when Loki returned. There was no reason to automatically assume not, after all. She smiled to herself, turned the key in the lock, and came inside.

Loki was already sitting on the sofa with the light turned on beside him, cloaked and armored and looking grimmer than intended. He stood immediately as the door swung open and hurried toward her.
"Teja-"

Teja was stunned. All this mental preparation for how long it might take him and all this wondering where he'd been and it looked like he'd gone home for less than a day-
She smacked him, though since he was armoured it probably hurt her more than him.
"You ass!"

"I am," he said ruefully. "I made a terrible mistake."

"More terrible than running off without hanging around to say goodbye and without any explanation as to where you are? I really, really hope not, Loki."

"One mistake encompassing a dozen others, then," he conceded. He was speaking in the sort of bright, quick voice he only ever seemed to use when thoroughly devastated.

"Oh, for God's sake, just tell me what it is then!" she said miserably, starting to feel agitated.

"...you might want to sit down."

She gripped the...lapels, sort of, of his Asgardian coat and glared up at him.

Loki looked down at her for a long moment and then sighed unhappily, lifting her hands from his coat.
"...I went home," he said. "To Asgard. My only desire was to see my mother again, but my father had other plans, it seems."
Loki pulled himself away from her and reached into his coat for one of his knives, which he flicked open and shut as he started pacing in front of the window.
"He wants me to be King."

Teja stared. Suddenly, she felt tears in her eyes.
"Isn't this just what you've always wanted!"

"...not anymore," he said, meeting her eyes. "That's exactly the trouble-"

"You can't even say no?" As soon as she said it, she realized he couldn't. Everything that had fallen to pieces with his family after he had tried to keep the throne, he couldn't tell his father to shove it now and expect them to maintain their forgiveness. She shook her head. When she spoke again, her voice was thick and strange-sounding. "Well, I suppose I am happy for you. Even if you don't want it anymore."

"It's spite," he said, voice starting to harshen. "He has two more sons now, it could just as easily have been one of them -"

Teja frowned. "More sons?"
