"Mother had twins," he snapped. "Oh- oh, and do you know what Mother didn't have? Me."
He took a moment to try to compose himself, but it didn't do much good.
"My entire existence is... oh, fuck me. I'm relieved for Mother's sake, certainly, but..."

"Wait- wait, start over... who are the twins? Who is your mother?"

He sullenly repeated Odin's account of his conception, with heavy emphasis on his newly fledged understanding of himself as existing only to serve Odin's political machinations, and then concluding with a mention of his tiny, endearingly homely little half-brothers.
"Of course," Loki added, "their birth was hardly less politically derived than mine."

"...Loki, you are next in succession if Thor doesn't want to be king," she said, thinking to herself that in Odin's position she would hardly want to raise the twins to be kings themselves. Also, thinking that that was a sibling dynamic likely to be even more competitive than Loki's and Thor's had been. "But maybe you could talk Thor into it- after all, he didn't want to be king because you were dead, right? And he blamed Odin? But Odin and you have made up and you're not dead."

"I can't thrust that on Thor- not now, after all the trouble I've already caused him, great lummox that he might be."
The recognition that he was personally responsible for Thor's estrangement from Jane Foster, possibly permanently, suddenly reared its head. He deserved what was coming next.
"...so, as you can imagine..."
He looked at his hands.
"Marriage is, as a matter of course, out of the question."

Having personally spearhead the movement to Not Get Married Actually herself, the fact that she took this like an instantaneous, physical blow was somewhat shocking.
It was a moment of catching her breath - and having to catch it all over again - and beginning to tear up - before she could speak.
"...what?"

"...unless..."
He looked up at her, slowly.
"It could be years before you were queen- if you even desire that. You could stay here, and- and take other lovers if you wish. I would always return to you. Always- I swear it.
"But if you came with me, to Asgard- you wouldn't stay as you are now. You and I would no longer stand condemned by your mortality-"

Teja, still in tears, took a sharp step away from him. She didn't even have the words.

"I'll never be able to have an ordinary dynastic marriage regardless," Loki continued. "Not unless I took a blue-skinned bride who could conceal my blood. I know you don't want children, and now at least that problem is solved..."
He realized he was ranting, and stopped.
"...I love you," he said. "This doesn't have to be the end for us. It could even be better. Now I have a purpose whether I like it or not."

"Loki," she said miserably, "I don't want to go to Asgard. I don't want to stay here and pine for you either."

"Wasn't a king what you always wanted?" he asked, taking a step toward her. "That was always how you liked me best."
He trailed a fingertip over her cheekbone and down to her lips.
"I do have ways that I could share both worlds with you," he said softly. "Ways of joining two points across the realms... you could stay here and I could be there but we would be together all the same..."
His voice was lower and hoarser now, but he was making a gamely effort to channel that strain into the kind of seduction that had marked the earliest days of their relationship.
"As king, I would have access to even greater sorcery than I presently command. I could fold space itself to and put a door in my bedchamber that opened onto this very house. We would never need part to begin with..."
He lowered himself to one knee before her, reaching for her hands.
"And you will have me the way you have long stopped believing you can."

Teja broke down partially in tears, covering her face and turning partly away from him.

He stood up and pulled her little body to his, heart pounding in his ears. He had seen the glimmer of hope in all of this and there was no way he was letting go of it now.
"Don't you see it now? I do. Perhaps once we've both got our heads on straight, we'll be able to look at this differently. It will be everything we used to desire together, but without the moral transgressions that tainted our original plans..."

"I don't want those things anymore-" she said, voice muffled against his coat. Something unhinged her about the way this felt, nothing at all like his other clothes. She didn't want to be trapped between two worlds like that - but she was being so silly, and so selfish, of course if she would just wait and see, it would all work itself out -

" None of them?" he asked, leaning down to say it low in her ear.
