Nearly 20 minutes crawled by before the Doctor suddenly burst into the room, with half the household (or at least that's how it seemed) behind him.
"There you are! See, the Lady Kay found her," he turned round to look at them, a slight smug smile tugging at his mouth, and adjusted his bowtie, "I told you, his majesty only sends his best."

"Um. Yes! Silly Elizabeth, she was just hiding," Micaela said with great cheer, placing the child in her bed and grinning at everyone. There were some odd looks, but the gathered crowd began to dissipate. she leaned up and whispered to the Doctor, "Time to go?"

"Yes," He said softly, he glanced down at the sleeping girl, "I'm afraid so," he put his hand on her shoulder. "She's safe now, I mean there'll be assassins and poisons and wars and plots, but safe as she can ever be anyway."

She'd got quite fond of the little girl in the few hours she'd been around. and reached down to stroke the red curls. "She'll do pretty well for herself," Micaela joked. "I think she'll be just fine."
She looked back up to the Doctor. "Back to Paris we go," she said with a slightly-sad but satisfied smile.

They took their leave of the household, managing to decline the offer of a carriage despite the fact that it earned them more odd looks, and walked down the road to the TARDIS.
"There!" Said the Doctor once they were inside, checking the scanner, "The relay network's set up, now, it won't run forever, just until battery runs out, say--ten years? But I think by then Elizabeth will be a bit more of a match--and anything that comes across her path will have to be very--careful!" he gave a squeaky glowing button several pokes in rapid succession. "Now then, it's fine all set up--and if anything shuts off the barrier it sends a signal--tuned to the same frequency as the TARDIS phone--" he gave the phone a loving pat, "we get a call first thing."
"So," He pulled a lever, "we can safely say--all systems go--" he glanced up at her, "Micaela the Magnificent, I'm taking you home."

Micaela smiled at the epithet. "Well when I woke up this morning, I can't say I thought I'd wind up in 1536," she teased. "But the only question... who wanted her kidnapped at all?"

The Doctor shrugged, "We might never know Micaela." he entered several keys rapidly, and yanked a pump, the room began to shake and the familiar strain of VWOORP VWOORP VWOORP enveloped them.

"I've started to like that sound," she joked, then realized she was still in stays and a huge skirt. "Oh! I'll go change into my own clothes..."
When she returned she was in her sundress from before. "There, all ready."

"Alright--home's right outside that door," He nodded toward the blue double doors, as the machine settled, he eased his grip on one of the levers and smiled. "You know, I think I'm going to miss you Micaela the Magnificent."

She smiled right back. "I'll miss you too, Doctor." A few moments later she had moved in for a great big hug. "Thank you so much, truly."

The hug caught him off-balance, but he hugged her back, squeezing her warmly. "Well, " He smiled, "I don't suppose I'll be seeing each other again," he chuckled, "unless an interdimensional rift opens up underneath Paris but---good luck."
"Oh--and Micaela, Da Vinci he never had to pick just one--but all those things he sketched in his notebooks, his finest, flights of fancy," the Doctor threw up his hands and wiggled his fingers in an imitation of birds fluttering, "he never got to see them."

She smiled up at him. "I'll figure something out. Try to reign in my wandering attention span. Don't stay alone for too long, though. Show up in someone else's courtyard," she instructed, then headed for the door. At the last second she turned and gave him a final smile. "Goodbye."

"As you like my lady." He smiled, and raised his hand in a half-salute, half-wave. He watched the doors swing close behind her, then glanced up at the scanner and monitors, the TARDIS was full of a million clicks and whirs.
"Where to next old girl?"
VWOORP VWOORP VWOORP
And there was no more blue box in the corner of the courtyard.

She watched him go, and once it had fizzled all the way out she went to go get her homework done. Maybe she'd get a cat--it was so lonely in here. Except that cats made her eyes itch.
It was weird, though, coming back here to the books and the papers when she'd just lived it. The dishes he'd dirtied were still in the sink. She figured he'd probably changed her life, but she didn't know quite how yet.
