"Yes, I know, and I'm terribly sorry," he shone the light on her, and extended a hand toward her head, then spotting the webbing and dust on it, thought better of it and quickly jerked it away. "But there's nothing we can do now. We can't save her. All we can do is keep her safe." The Doctor turned back and continued picking his way through the tunnel.

For a moment she was a little offended he thought she'd interfere like that and frowned. "No, that's not what I--" But she collected herself. "She... she's never going to see her daughter again. She's alone in a cell and she's never going to... Elizabeth knows something's going on, but they won't tell her what except that she can't see her mother, and her father doesn't want to see her, not now..."
She sidestepped a puddle. "She's afraid, Doctor. One of the greatest monarchs England will know is afraid, and all she wants is to see her mother."

The Doctor turned around and stared at both of them for a moment and sighed, "Alright," he said finally, "15 minutes." Turning he continued down the debris strewn tunnel, "We materialize in her cell, let her see her daughter, and leave before anyone can detect us." The dim blue light of the screwdriver played further down the tunnel. "Now come along you lot."

She honestly hadn't expected him to say yes. She gasped, then grinned. "Thankyouthankyouthankyou!"

"Shh!" The Doctor said a bit sharply. "We still have a long ways to go, and we can't afford to get caught."
They slogged on, sometimes past gratings through which a dim light shone, turning left, then right, at seemingly identical junctions, finally they reached what looked like a window set almost at ground level with iron bars and a giant lock."Ah, here we are." The Doctor zapped the lock, shoved up the metal grating, crawled part way out, then turned to help Micaela and Elizabeth.

Micaela held up the sleeping Princess. "Here, take Elizabeth..."

"What? Oh, yes!" Looking a bit worried, Doctor reached out his arms and accepted the peacefully slumbering toddler. Then he straightened up, shifting awkwardly trying to adjust and keep from disturbing the little girl.
"Micaela, are you alright? Can you manage?" Much as he'd never admit it, he secretly hoped she would not ask him to do anything that would jar awake the little future monarch.

Elizabeth slept right on through, even snuggling her head against the Doctor's shoulder.
The noise Micaela made pushing herself up was not the most ladylike, but she managed quite well on her own (even if her ascent was a little ungainly). "Lifetime of competitive swimming--pushing myself up out of pools since I was six," she admitted, brushing herself off as she stood. "Here, want me to take her?"

"Why, yes--thank you--that would be very kind of you--" though Elizabeth stirred slightly she continued sleeping peacefully as she was returned to Micaela's loving arms.
They were standing by a small, apparently abandoned stone house, heavily overgrown along its base with thick brambles, and surrounded by gnarled, wide-spreading trees. These loomed ominously, branches shifting against a grey sky, but provided the advantage of screening them from any passerby.
"Come along then," the Doctor grinned broadly, "Micaela the Magnificent, and your....little....future majesty! It's just--half a mile looping around, the TARDIS is waiting for us!"

You really couldn't help but smile around him. "I think right now she's a Highness," she commented, and followed cheerfully.

By some small miracle of sorts, they managed to reach the TARDIS without incident, or attracting too much notice.
Once inside the Doctor busied himself at the controls."Right! May 1536--what d'you say--the 16th? At about--two o'clock?" The machine pitched and lurched, and the familiar VWOORP VWOORP VWOORP filled the air.

She only hoped they didn't wind up meeting with the Princes in the tower rather than Anne Boleyn. The pitching and noise woke Elizabeth, but not fast enough that she got any sort of a look at where she was before Micaela hurried her out. From the hay on the stone floor and the bars on the window, they were certainly in a prison cell and--
"...Elizabeth?" It appeared they were in the right place. Anne Boleyn was not as pretty as Micaela had expected, but her eyes were dark and quick as Micaela passed off the waking child. "You've got fifteen minutes," was all Micaela said before heading back towards the blue doors.

Back inside the TARDIS, the Doctor fiddled with a few of the controls, making slight adjustments here and there, and narrowly avoiding squirting himself with ketchup, he glanced at the scanner, Anne Boleyn was fussing over her daughter in a manner to be expected of a woman who knew herself to be only days from death. A heaviness began to settle in his chest and he forced himself to look away.
"Micaela the Magnificent!" He exclaimed as his new friend entered, even he could hear the false cheeriness in his voice. "Well, 1536, is what you expected?"

"Don't think I could have anticipated," she admitted, laughing a little. "Thank you, really. For bringing me."

"You see," The Doctor leaned back against the TARDIS console folding his arms, and grinned with just a trace of smugness, "a little jaunt was just what the doctor ordered!"
