"Is it always like this?" She asked, sitting down right on the floor and looking up, large skirt flared around her. "Unexpected fellow-travelers from the 52nd century? Running through secret passages?"

"Well, not....always, though it happens, on not--infrequent occasions."
The Doctor took out his screwdriver, and spun it round in his fingers carelessly, "But then, where's the fun in time travel if you're just going to be an idle tourist?"

"And are you always alone? Or are there other people who need interventions?" She was teasing now, hands occupied with repinning her hair.

The Doctor shrugged, "Oh, they come, they go, sometimes I'm the head honcho of my--sky team, other times, I fly solo."

She raised both eyebrows, wishing she could raise only one but her expression generating mostly the same effect.
"Please never say 'head honcho' again." A snort of laughter in spite of herself.

The Doctor busied himself checking the instruments at the console "Oh well now, I guess some people just don't get comedy--" A beeping noise startled both of them. He moved swiftly around the other side, and flicked several switches.
"Micaela! How much time has she been out there? Because the sensors just picked up readings of advanced technology--very advanced," he puckered his brow, "well by 16th century Earth standards."

Though completely incapable of understanding them, she hopped up to look at the sensors herself.
"Um, a few minutes tops.... why?"

"Because, we might have to go very, very soon, unless--" his hands spun over some of the dials, he reached over and yanked one of the levers with surprising violence, "there!"
He struggled out of his tweed coat impatiently and tossed it to the side, leaning over the console he wiped his brow. " 15 minutes. We promised her 15 minutes, and she'll get 15 minutes." The Doctor clambered down to the lower platform and peered under the console, reaching in a hand among the maze of wiring, making several adjustments. Looking over his shoulder at her, he flashed her a smile, "Now," a bit of the old bravado was creeping back into his voice, "most people would say--scramble a signal--but I say I like my eggs scrambled, not my signals--besides they're already doing it, poor strategy to always make the same move as your opponent," he jerked back his hand as one tweaking resulted in a shower of sparks, "other people would say, bounce the signal! But this isn't dodgeball, or kickball, or whatever the other....ball...thing games you humans play." He was disappearing further into the dimly green lit mass of wiring. "Micaela, there's a toolkit over there by the thing with the handles, not that thing, the other thing--d'you think you could get it for me?"
"But I say," The Doctor continued, he was stabbing at something now, hidden from view from the waist up and there was the occasional hiss or clink, "what you wanna do is throw your signal. Like ventriloquism! Only you know, with a spatial and temporal perceptive wave length! Have you got that kit Micaela?"

Panic was the natural instinct. She was ready to hop out and grab Elizabeth, but of course he had something else up his sleeve. Flustered hurrying wasn't too different from panic, but there was less of that sinking feeling involved. In fact, it was sort of thrilling.
It all changed, though. "Humans? You're not--" but she had to find a toolkit, and, mind racing in all different directions, she went to do as he said. Thankfully she spoke fluent 'thing by the other thing with the doohickey' in daily life, and was able to locate it and pass it to him.
"What do you mean 'humans'?" She peered at him suspiciously.

"Wha--ah--good!" The Doctor shoved himself out from under the console, "Excellent Micaela,I'm beginning to think you are not only magnificent--but very handy in a pinch." After rummaging in the kit for a moment he pulled out a spiraling coppery object, and vanished back underneath the console.

She was again quite flattered but utterly confused. A few seconds of gaping, which she thought she might put on her resume as a special talent at this point, and she continued, mostly calmly, "Humans. You said something about Humans. As if you were not one of them."

"Oh that! Well that's because I'm not." the motion of a shrug was barely visible beneath the tangled wires.
Then suddenly he became visible again, "I mean, no offense," he added looking up at Micaela, his eyes dancing, "you fellas are amazing! Almost everything about you--your art--your music--your buildings--and things." The Doctor flung out his arms wide, the coppery implement still in one hand. "You do it all--on just one planet--in just 10,000 years you do more than the Sycorax in--one million! Or the--Raxacoricofallapatorians," he made a face. "Nasty fellas--and I don't just mean the smell." The Doctor vanished once more beneath the nest of wiring.

She stared. And stared, then shook her head. Time travel, aliens, wasn't too far a leap. Sort of an adjustment in world-view, but it happened.
One burning question, though. "Then what are you?"

"Time Lord." The Doctor sighed and pushed himself back out, and sat up, "I'm only going to explain this once, because I do it every time."
"You're human, but look time lord." The copper tool drove these points home several times. "I'm time lord, but you lot are always insisting I look human. Neither's one or the same, but both can get along, be pals, chums, ma--you know what I mean."

"Excuse you, I didn't say anybody looked like anybody; I only asked a question," she placated, hands up, confused but still feeling a bit tease-y. "I am a human and I look like a ...time lord. Sure," she agreed. Whatever that is. "Now stop brandishing the thingywhatsit and do I need to go get Elizabeth?"
