Ellie and her roommate did not get along. Thus, when one of the girls got married and moved away, Ellie took advantage of the opportunity and had her parents' footmen carry her things from one room to the next after she went home for the fall break.
She knocked on the door to introduce herself to the girl she'd be living with. If Ellie remembered correctly, she was foreign: German, or Russian, or something. It wasn't a lack of interest that made her forget, just a spacey personality. It didn't occur to her that right before move-in, with footmen waiting with her things, might be a little late for introductions. Oh well.

Nattie opened the door, clearly still half asleep, yet aware of her surroundings
"Yes?"

"Nattie please" she opened the door further and stood at fully attention "and you must be Ellie de Winter yes?"

"Oh thank goodness," she grinned self-deprecatingly. "And yes, that's me."
Ellie offered a hand.

Nattie was a little hesitant at first, although she didn't show it and took the other girls hand "Come on in."

Behind her stood three men with her bags, and one carrying a huge armful of books.
"My mother had to keep me from bringing back half the library from home," Ellie laughed.

Nattie pointed to a bookshelf at the side of the room that was half full "I am knowing what you mean, go ahead and put them there."

"So you are Russian!" She exclaimed, noticing the lettering on the books as the footmen brought things in. She'd unpack herself. "I couldn't remember if it was that or German. Oh, thank you," she said to the men. "Jimmy, Michael, Tom, Bill. Say hello to everyone at home for me!"
They filed out.

"Da" she said with a smile "and you are so emphatically English."

Ellie laughed, sitting on the bed. "Guilty as charged. Cornwall, in particular. And you?"

"I am from" she repeated the name of her hometown "it is relatively unknown, but we are spending much time in big cities, Moscow, St. Petersburg."

"So how long have you been at Madame Villette's?" It was smalltalk, but Ellie was wondering why she'd never met Nattie before.

"This is being my third year, you?" She sat down in the chair at the desk and crossed her hands.

"Oh, this is my first. How old are you?"
Maybe that was why.
