Ned scrunched his eyebrows together.
"Um...okay. I think I understood that."
He paused, knowing he was going to tread rather lightly upon the next subject.
"How exactly does a vampire...die? Like with a stake through the heart?"

*She shrugged.* "Depends. I can't die by anything but fire or sunlight, but the Graf and his son can both be staked. Some vampires a stake will only paralyze, and some they won't even break the skin."

"So, basically, some vampires are invincible?"

"We can all die somehow. I don't know anyone who's actually untouchable--fire tends to get all of us."

He bit his lower lip in contemplation of that fact, swaying to and fro on the balls of his feet.
"Any particular reason why? Who was the first vampire anyhow, Dracula?"

"Nah, Dracula was just a pretentious douchebag. The first of my strain were an Egyptian Pharaoh and his Queen--still rumored to be alive somewhere. Others I don't know about, though it would make sense for them to be similar."

He chuckled to himself.
"So, these movies and books really ought to get their facts straight, huh? I mean, last time I heard, there was some huge commotion about sparkly, cold vampires with golden eyes. I'm not sure if you've heard about that."

"One better: I've met one! Her name was Alice and she was quite nice. The great thing about vampire movies is that no matter what bullshit they come up with, there's bound to be a real vampire type it's based off of."

"There's a theater not too far away from the Pie Hole. Or there will be, actually, and I remember there was this massive throng of girls screaming about that movie. And some guy named Edward Cullen."
Ned cringed at the thought.
"It scared away a lot of customers."

*She giggled.* "Alice is his sister. You'll find that a lot of supposedly fictional characters find their way here. Most of them manage to avoid finding their canon of origin, but it's still pretty trippy when you walk into Elizabeth Bennet at the market."

Ned commenced to wonder whether he was a merely a fragment of someone's imagination. He couldn't possibly be fictional.
"Have you ever thought that maybe we don't exist?"

"This is all a lie." *She said seriously.* "The earth is just a toy in someone's desk drawer. None of it is real!" *She made 'spooky' fingers and widened her eyes.*

"I'm serious!" he exclaimed.
Ned stared at Cal solemnly for several seconds before poking in her in the side and running away.

*A distinctly undignified sound was muffled in Cal's throat, but still managed to echo around the ballroom. It sounded vaguely like "ergp". She frowned at him.*
"Well, either way we think we're here, so we may as well enjoy it. What does existing even mean?"

"That depends on your perception of the word. Could it be going through the motions of our daily lives, or could it be achieving your true potential, despite the social norms that would be broken in doing so?"
He returned and poked her a bit harder.
"Like, if we didn't exist, that wouldn't have occurred. You wouldn't know that I'd jabbed you because the action wouldn't exist. I think. And this wouldn't exist--"
Ned retrieved one of Cal's gloved hands and placed a soft kiss on the back of it.
"--although I'd very much like it to."
