With Castro gone, Holmes moved forward. He detested the necessity of this, but Irene had insisted upon auditioning. Her thought was to keep her mind off her condition. And Holmes had insisted upon accompanying her, in case of emergency. He had not considered the fact of Castro's employment here. There was something odd about the man, something new. He walked differently than he had before, tread more gently despite his bulk. It was a difference most men would not have discerned.
He approached Irene, though as usual he had difficulty looking her in the eye. Apart from the others, to low for the rest of the cast to hear, he said, "How are you faring?"

"I'm...I'm better. Better than when I wasl in my room- I have something else to think about now."
*She didn't want to tell him what she'd been thinking, but it slipped out before she could stop herself.*
"The man who played Faust...he's the one with Destler..."

The muscle in Holmes' jaw twitched.
"I know," he said quietly. "He was there when I... when I thought I'd killed Destler. I knew him before that, too. He was not the most savory character. But he was never into anything... like this."

His fault...just one bite, and the craving would be gone. Destler can't stop me- I could rip out his throat, or make him watch his lover as I-
*Irene put a hand to her head*
"It doesn't matter- it wasn't his fault."
Don't think those things. Don't EVER think them.

Holmes glanced at her sharply.
"He's no innocent," he said. "But it was not. Would you prefer to go, Irene? You aren't needed here any more, today."

Oblivious to, or more likely consciously ignoring, the fact that this was a serious situation, Pavi strode toward the talking pair as though he owned the place, the mindless and oversexed ballet tramps still hanging on his arms and attempting to rub their hips on his even as they walked.

"Buon giorno, buon giorno," he said airily. "The Pavi apologizes for-a being late. When did-a the rehearsal start?"

*Irene was cut off from answering by the arrival of the strange...person. She immediately realized she had been wrong when she thought nothing could shock her after Dracula.*

Pavi, typically, read nothing more into her expression than that a beautiful woman was staring at him. He smiled horribly, the warped edges of his current face stretching around his lips to reveal a large area of the flesh underneath in all its scarred hideousness. He took Irene's hand and brought it to his ruined mouth, a lecherous whisper of "Signorina..." brushing over her skin as he kissed it.

Holmes stepped forward and rather more sharply than politely took Irene's hand, removing it from Pavi's. This creature was as hideous as Destler, if not moreso, and hadn't even the decency to hide himself.
Not that Destler was a model of... anything Holmes wanted, really.
"The rehearsal is over," he snapped. "And you are not in the cast. Furthermore, we were just leaving."

He stood there in shock, exchanging confused stares with the two ballet sluts before looking back at Holmes and bursting into laughter. The girls laughed two, and the three voices united in a dissonant chorus of high-pitched glee.

*Irene stared in the sort of horrified manner usually associated with observers of car accidents*
"I suppose you could talk to the managers..."

"Irene," Holmes said, almost pleading. He did not see the point in wasting time with madmen.

"Yes, pardon me, I really should be going."
*She began to walk away with Holmes, whispering to him*
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have spoken, but- what is that? Is that mask made of..."

"Er, yes," Holmes said tightly. "I cannot imagine how someone like that is left to run mad. Pardon me for intervening. I do not mean to curtail your society, Irene. I merely... I am protective. It is an irrational notion, perhaps."
