He had not intended to get there early. He had not, in point of fact, intended to be on time at all.
Once here, however, Carlos decided to make the best of it, and settled in to be conspicuously early in order to rail at the others for wasting his time. Yes, that would be just as suitable, he thought as he leaned back in an orchestra seat, setting his boots on the row before him.

*Julian hung to the shadows, his eyes ever constant. But he wasn't ready to reveal himself just yet. He wanted to watch the humans in their mulling, to understand them. To prepare. He wouldn't let himself think for a moment that he was at all nervous about being out in the open. Among them. No, not at all.*

Erik sat in Box Five, with a manuscript he was working on and ready to observe. He wanted to be there, for Julian--and also to oversee the development of his new reign.

"It's about a-time!" Carlos bellowed, rising like a thundercloud from his seat and apparently thinking he was Italian. "Why you make me wait? El Castro has things to do!"
In truth, though in secret, he was excited about this production. There had been many good voices at the audition--Maleo's casting as Wagner excepted, of course--and he was eager to bring to the role the new meaning he'd found in the story given his recent experiences.
He was eager to triumph yet again, the way he had in the early days when it had been enough to know that he was doing the best work he could and that adulation and comfort would follow. He'd found those in large supply; but the primary motive had fallen away, somewhere along the line.
A pale redhead slunk in.
"You!" he bellowed. "What are you doing here?"

Alex stared at Castro, his intimidation factor warring with her familiarity with him and his type.
"I'm in the cast," she explained slowly, as if to a madman or foreigner. He was probably both, she thought. "I play Siebel. We've worked together."
The man's eyes narrowed.
"You're a girl," he rumbled. "Un chica," he added as if as an afterthought.
Alex fought the urge to roll her eyes.
"Well," Castro said, his eyes traveling over her critically. "At least they're putting you back in trousers."
She supposed that meant she was "dismissed" from his ire. For the moment. She flashed an apologetic smile at the rest of the cast; she supposed her lazy habits would have to mend, now she had a part again.

"Ese 'una chica,' Señor Castrrrrrrrrrro," mocked Maleo, showing up just in time to hear the pompous tenor abusing the Spanish language. It was one thing that he had heard of Castro being Spanish, but to hear his language butchered for the sake of looking good - It left a bitter taste in Maleo's mouth.
"Perdoneme," he sneered, intentionally brushing past the haughty tenor to introduce himself to the young woman who would play Siebel. "I am Maleo Basilio Addams, Señorita, and I am pleased to make your acquaintance, since we will be working together." He extended his hand to her in warm welcoming, admittedly showing himself to be of much better manners than El Castro - even if it meant having to eschew his own beliefs to one-up Carlos in their little game, then so be it.

*Xavier arrived, looking generally (and genuinely) happy to be there at the Opera.*
"Morning everyone!"

Alex smiled at Maleo, as much in pleasure as to demonstrate her own good manners in the face of Castro's rudeness.
"Charmed, Señor," she drawled, taking his hand firmly. "How revolutionary of you, to wish to get along with your co-workers. I commend it."

Carlos glared at Xavier and nearly rolled his eyes at Maleo's "performance."
He'd been friendly, once. Until he'd reached a level where it became more prudent to keep one's distance. Singers, he'd found, were all backstabbing opportunists, and on the highest rungs the faces smiling up at you were only waiting to pull you down.
"Can we get started? Please?" he intoned with minimal politeness.

After making a small show of greeting Xavier with as much courtesy as he had shown Alex, Maleo then turned to Carlos, giving the primo uono a handsome grin and an elegant bow. He decided to give the phony a little test of his Spanish, and could barely contain himself as he greeted his "fellow" Spaniard. "Ah, buenas dias, Señor Castro. ¿Tienes un gato en tus pantalones, o estás feliz verme?*" he asked in rapid, fluent ((read: ghetto)) Spanish, rather jovially at that, then stood himself upright, an impish smile on his face. ((*Note: Darla corrected me! On a lighter note, Maleo asked "Do you have a cat in your pants or are you just happy to see me?"))

((I think that should be, ¿Tiene un gato en sus pantalones, o está ud. feliz verme? formally, but since this is light-hearted, it would be ¿Tienes un gato en tus pantalones, o estás feliz verme? --Sorry to be such a grammar Nazi.))
