Heartlock sat down beside him and looked up at him.
"Do you want to talk about it?" she asked quietly.
A thundering sound outside told her that the thunderstorm had started.

"It's not much, actually. Just my father," he shrugged casually. "What of you?"

Heartlock smiled shyly and looked into the fire. She heard the rain pouring outside. It would be impossible to leave the house for a month.
"Well, most of my tribe laughs at me for dressing like a man. But when I work as hard as I do, I can't go around in pretty dresses. My parents died a couple of years ago, and now I have to take care of everything in the household all by myself."

"Oh, there's nothing wrong with dressing like a man. I knew several women like that." Christian lowered his gaze to the flickering fire.
"Must be difficult by yourself," he commented.

Heartlock smiled and looked over at him. It felt nice to have company. She wondered how the other elves would react if they knew she was alone with a human man in her cabin. The thought made her smile.
"Oh, I'll survive." she chuckled with her dry sense of humor. Then she looked over at him.
"Tell me about your father."

"An oppressive bastard, if I do say so myself. And please pardon my language."
Christian blushed, cleared his throat, and scratched his head. His gaze grew cloudy as if he were looking off into the distance and another life altogether.

Heartlock smiled gently and placed her tiny hand over his.
"You don't have to apologize for me, Christian. I use language myself, if I get upset or angry."
She looked into his eyes and added softly.
"If you need to get it off your chest, I am willing to listen to you."

"If you wouldn't mind, I'd rather not speak of the past," he said quietly. "It hurts too much. Perhaps when I'm ready, I shall pour forth my deepest, darkest secrets to you."
After all, he had not gotten entirely over Belladonna.

Heartlock smiled warmly and placed her hand over his.
"I will not force anything out of you. If you need to talk, however, I will listen, and not even torture can force a secret out of me."

"I'm glad to know that. Truly, you are a strong-willed and good-hearted woman," he said, squeezing her hand gently in between both of his.

Heartlock smiled and squeezed his hands gently back.
"Strong-willed is correct. I wouldn't be too sure about the good heart."
She replied in her dryly sarcastic sense of humor. Not being used to get compliments, she had never learned how to receive them.
"I look forward to get to know you better. Looking out of the window, I can tell you we won't get anywhere any time soon."

Christian followed her gaze to the violent storm brewing outside.
He shuddered, "I wouldn't want to become caught up in that. It is rather fortunate for me, therefore, that you found me when you did. Otherwise, who knows what might have become of me?"

Heartlock pictured a mental image of what WOULD have become of Christian if she hadn't found him. And that was a gruesome image indeed. She saw him laying in the forest, cold, dead, half eaten by beasts or God-knows-what. She shuddered and placed her tiny hand over his.
"Don't SAY that!!!"

Christian fiddled with his fingers and arched a brow.
"And why not? You very well know the possibilities that might have befallen me."

Heartlock looked up at him with glittering, beautiful hazel eyes.
"That doesn't mean I like the images that shows up in my brain. I am glad I found you when I did. Do you wonder how I managed to get you up in the tree when you were unconscious?"
