Heartlock smiled, a bit shy. A tough woman like her seldom met men who looked at her with fondness in their eyes. Fear on the other hand... She sighed.
"Well, as you can see, there's a thunderstorm on it's way. And you are too poorly dressed to be sent back to where you come from in weather like that. I have room and food enough for the both of us."

Christian held up his hands in protest.
"But you've already done too much for me--"

Heartlock stood and pulled the curtains aside so he could look through the window. There were dark clouds in the horizon.
"You don't want me to send you out to that, do you?"
She replied calmly.
"And here they can last for as long as a month."

Alone in the rain. Not something he'd like to cope with for long.
"All right," he conceded with a sigh. "Just tell me when I can be of any help to you."

Heartlock smiled.
"I will. But in weather like that, the best thing we can do is staying indoors. There's not much work we can do when the rain lasts."

"It's just that I feel like a burden. And you've already done so much for me..."
Christian released his hand from hers and buried his face in his arms.

Heartlock looked down at the man, with compassion.
"Hey now. You are no burden. How many men do you think I meet here? Who doesn't laugh at me because I am wearing men's clothing, and hunt and fight like a man? I appreciate your company. Really."

Christian blushed profusely.
"Thank you very much. But please, I need to earn my keep around here."

*Heartlock smiled and looked over at him. He looked strong.*
"Well then, perhaps you could chop some wood from time to time, and make fire in the fireplace, so I have somewhere to cook?"

"That shouldn't be a problem. Really, isn't there more I could do?" Christian asked, hurriedly looking around him for potential suggestions.
"There's always bringing back food and fetching water and--"

Heartlock smiled and placed her hand on his shoulder. She spoke mildly to him.
"During the long-lasting thunderstorms around here, it can be dangerous to move around outside. The winds are so strong that trees are breaking and falling over, the water is flooding the paths, loose items are flying around in the wind, and you risk getting hit by them by being outdoors. Besides, the weather is too cold, and you are too poorly dressed. I will need to make you new clothes before I dare to let you out in rainstorms like that.
In this part of Lorien, this kind of weather is common, and we know when to gather food and water to be prepared when the thunderstorms hit us. Because of this knowledge, we have a good way to store our food and water to keep it fresh. We simply cool it down until it is needed."

Christian's wandering gaze about the room settled in a dark corner.
"I suppose I wouldn't be much help to you if I were blown away or drowned. Just... just tell me if you ever require assistance."
He inclined his head, seeming to notice something for the first time.
"Mademoiselle, is this house above the earth?"

Heartlock looked at the man resting on the bed. He didn't look too bad. But she knew men were vain, so she pretended not to notice, and lowered her gaze. She didn't like the thought of him being blown away or drowning. What a waste.....
"Well, that would have wasted all my hard work to save your life. I promise to tell you if I need assistance."
She spoke in her dryly sarcastic voice, filled with humor. It was her way to hide her uncertainty when she had to deal with emotions that were unfamiliar to her. Heartlock had been on her own as far as she could remember. Her fellow tribe members helped her of course, but she had not yet met a man she could call her own.
Christian had opened a whole new world for her, full of possibilities. But she was too uncertain about him to know how that would go. She had to get to know him better first. This thunderstorm would give her that opportunity.
She was pulled out of her thoughts by his question, and smiled when she replied.
"Well, yes. This is a treehouse. We are now about 10 feet above the earth. So I hope you are not sleepwalking, or you might have a tiny problem...."

"I shouldn't have a problem with that. Sleep weighs me down."
Heartlock was charming, in her own dry way. And besides, she had spared his life. Christian felt obligated to humor her and repay his debt.

*Heartlock chuckled with laughter and looked over at him. There was something charming about him, even if he had just woken up after being dead drunk the day before. Heartlock looked pensive for a minute, as if she was thinking, pursing her lips while she did. Then she looked over at Christian again.*
"I am glad you don't sleepwalk. You could break your neck if you did that here. I have been thinking. I have some materials that can be used to make clothings. The storm is breaking out any moment now, so we won't have possibilites to go anywhere.
What do you say if we spend some of the time we have to be inside to make you some new clothes? I doubt they will be as fashionable as the ones humans wear in Paris, but at least you will be capable of surviving our weather conditions."
