"Anyhow..." *Lizzie picked up with a sideways glance at Kip before focusing a softer eye on Lark.*
"It'll be nice to have another girl about the place. Maybe in time, we'll be able to teach this boys to behave..."
*She sighed, trying to stop herself from going off on a tangent.*
"...fat lot of good that'd do."

"Uh huh..." *Lizzie answered with a roll of her eyes. Dinner wound down and Lizzie cleared her throat.*
"Why don't ya 'boys get on now an' let me get started with the mess 'ya made of these dishes."

*Jamie slunk off, as usual, about his own business no one really knew or bothered caring about, since it didn't bring trouble back to the house.*

*Jake glanced at Lark, but crumbled under Lizzie's orders, moving out to the back porch. A few minutes later, the smell of fragrant tobacco smoke wafted in through the back door.*

"Let me help ya with those," *said Kip, grabbing a biscuit in each hand, stuffing one in his mouth and nabbing a third as the plate passed in front of him.*

Alex grinned through the rest of the dinner, liking Lizzie's family quite a lot, and convinced that she herself would be no good model for their behavior. She wondered about the quiet one, who had slunk away at the first opportunity.
"That was grand, Lizzie," she said happily. "I've no doubt you're more practiced at washing than I, but I can certainly learn to dry."

"I break things," *said Kip as helpfully as possible, beginning to drift towards the door as he saw the rest of the food disappearing from view into the larder and under cloths.*

*Lizzie gave him a shrewd glance.*
"An' I s'ppose that's exactly why 'ya should be gettin' on out of my kitchen."

*Lizzie rolled her eyes, turning back to the other women.*
"Boys..." *She sighed heavily, shaking her head as she resumed gathering up everything to the sink.*

"I never could understand them," Alex said with extra meaning, gathering up more plates and hoping she didn't break anything.
