*Lizzie was sobered a bit at the thought, but tried to keep her smile.*
"Yer one of us, Jake. Ain't no question of that." *What else could she say?*

"Listen'a me..." *he shook his head with a slow grin.* "Y'd think I'd killed a half-bottle o' whiskey, talking fool-talk like that."

"Or like ya'd brought over yer intended to be grilled by us nosy folk." *Lizzie tried to smooth supportively.* "Ya ain't been lo'quacious when it come 'ta talkin' 'bout her."

"Hey now, be nice..." *muttered Jake, his hand settling protectively over Lark's.*
"Oh, we're always nice," *said Kip with a grin.* "Ain't we, Miss...Miss Lark?"
*He chuckled.*
"I s'pose Bullet's not yer last name on weekdays," *he said.*

*Lark blushed, her eyes lowering and her hand tightening around Jake's.*
"Won't matter in a few days, now will it?" *She managed with a smile and a meaningful glance at Jake.*

Alex watched the widening family drama, but at "Bullet" had to speak up.
"I'm sorry, Miss Lark, but what is it you do?"

*Jake grinned at Lark, but made a mental note to ask her her maiden name later--it suddenly struck him as odd that he knew so little about who she really was. Not that it mattered. He just didn't like the idea of only knowing her first name--what if she disappeared? How would he find her? How would he know where to look or who to ask?*

"I shoot." *Lark answered simply, only to realize a more thorough description would help.*
"That is, I'm a trick shot with the show in town." *She smiled, but the whole conversation was weird for her. It was so rare that she met people without them already knowing what she did.*

An eyebrow shot up.
"Truly?" Alex said, impressed. "That's fascinating. Perhaps I ought to have run off to join the circus, rather than the Opera. What do you think, Miss Lark?"

*Lark's eyes narrowed, as if she couldn't decide if the girl was making fun of her or not.*
"Well..." *She answered politely, giving her the benefit of a doubt.* "I suppose that would depend on what you like to do, what you're good at and why you've run off." *She smiled genially.*

Alex nodded gravely.
"I suppose it would," she said. "As it is, I'm a better singer than I am a shot, so I think I shall stay where I am. A bit stuffy lot, though, which is why I ask."
She smiled sunnily.

*Lark nodded, sort of understanding. She'd seen the type before. Sometimes that class would 'slum it' and take in a show, always in their private box which was really just more closer seats with provided shade. Isolated from their lessers. It'd never made sense to her, but that hardly mattered.*
"Well, if you like, you should come by and take in a show." *She sort of understood sitting on the outside of this family unit. There wasn't a reason they shouldn't come together through the Quinns.* "I know I'd love to take in an opera."
*Her brow lowered in momentary thought.* "What is it exactly that you do? Something with trousers?"

Well. That was one way to put it.
"More or less," she said. "I specialize, shall we say, in the sort of roles which require a girl to play a boy. And I should love for you to attend the Opera." She glanced at the rest of the table. "In fact, anyone who wishes, I can secure some seats." Alex looked back at Lark. "And I would love to see the show. Thank you."

*Now they were getting somewhere. Bonding. That was nice. She had a weird vision of the lot of them taking in a show up at the Opera. Seemed weird, but she wasn't one to pass up opportunity.*
"That's right sweet of you, Miss Alexandra."
*She glanced at Jake.* "I, for one, look forward to taking you up on your offer."

"Count me in." *Lizzie interjected eagerly. She quickly buried herself back in her meal.*
