*Jake came in from work, half-heartedly making an effort to scrub the dirt from his boots onto the mat before he tracked it into the kitchen, kissed Liz on the cheek as she stirred and basted whatever was making his mouth water, tried to nab a hot biscuit from the tray she'd pulled from the oven and managed to both burn his hand on the biscuit and get a smack on it from her stirring spoon before he disappeared into his room to bathe and change before Lark got there.*

((I'm assuming that Alex is still there since she was waiting for him, but perhaps had stepped out to use the loo since he didn't see her.))
*In his rush, Lizzie hadn't had a chance to get a word in edgewise about Alex and dinner and...well the rest. She sighed and went about setting the table.*

((Alright.))
*Jake whistled as he shaved with a straight razor, pausing now and then to rinse it in the basin in front of him.*

Alex, composed now and with a fresh-scrubbed face, entered the kitchen.
"Sorry," she said to Lizzie, grateful there was no one else there. "Got a bit nervous."

"Nah, it's fine." *Lizzie answered with a soft smile.*
"Just missed Jake though." *She gestured down the hall at his room.*
"You'd think she was some delicate flow'r, way he gets on about gettin' ready fer her."
*She shook her head.*

Alex smiled despite her lingering nerves.
"More unexpected company?"

*Lizzie winced slightly, just realizing that she hadn't really remembered to mention that...*
"Not quite. I mean, she's expected. Jake's sweet lady friend, betrothed and all. Sorry...for not mentioning it before."
*She was quick to add.*
"But please stay. I'd love 'ya 'ta meet all of 'em."

"It's fine," Alex said. "It's doesn't matter. I'll be ever so charming, regardless."

"No doubt." *Lizzie's grin blossomed once more as she maneuvered around Alex, putting out the napkins.*
"But then, I wasn't worried 'bout that part."
*She gave her a wink.*

"Can I help?"

"Sure." *Lizzie answered brightly, handing her the napkins and turning back to the roast.*
"It's sweet of 'ya 'ta help. I'm a bit behind."

"Of course," Alex said, laying the napkins down. She knew this bit, at least.

*Lizzie looked confused by the knock on the door. Quirking a brow, she wiped her hands.*
"Just a sec. Guess she might be a touch early."
*She bustled out of the kitchen and to the door.*

*Lark stood on the door step, shifting her weight anxiously. Of course they'd be nice. And they'd get along fine. And Kip would be fine. And everything would be fine. Right? Then way did she feel so nervous? She did her best to keep smiling as she heard the door being opened.*

Despite her curiosity--what sort of girl would Lizzie's brother go for? Someone quiet and demure, perhaps. A little wife type. Anyway, despite her curiosity, Alex remained in the kitchen, trying to remember her manners.
