*Sorcha climbed the tree and sat comfortably in the sturdiest upper branches, munching on an apple.*

**TEN YEAR OLD LIAM**
*Liam squinted up into the tree curiously, one hand shading his eyes. He was due to leave for boarding school at the end of this summer... he was apprehensive, to say the least, but was extremely glad his mother had refused to allow him to be sent when he was six.*
*He recognized the girl, as the stablemaster's daughter, Sorcha MacNamara.*
"What are you doing up there?"

"The same thing ye're doin' down there, but with a better view," *she replied, gnawing on the apple core.*

"I'm not eating." *He reasoned.* "And I'm not doing anything. I think."
*He thought for a moment. He liked thinking.*

"Well that's plain," *she said with a hint of scorn.* "Can ye climb trees?"

*He frowned, insulted.*
"Of course I can climb trees." *He scoffed.*

*He climbed up nimbly, not caring if he got his pants dirty, and sat on a branch opposite her triumphantly.*
"Well, now I'm not on the ground." *He stuck his tongue out.*

*She shrugged.*
"Higher the better, I always say. Why stay in a valley if there's a mountain to be climbed?"

"I like the ocean, personally." *He said.* "My dad won't let me out on boats usually but sometimes when we visit mum's family her cousins take me sailing."
*He dangled his feet and kicked them back and forth.*
"I'm Lionel William James Norrington de Winter." *He looked to the heavens, as if in effort to remember all of his names in the right order.*

"But everyone calls me Liam."
*The grubby, quirky boy sitting on a tree branch and calling himself Liam looked nothing like the heir to the whole estate who was named Lionel William James. Which was his mom's influence... she insisted he be allowed to get dirty and think how he wanted.*

*He frowned and shook his head.*
"Nuh-uh. I'm Liam. My dad is Sir. Whoever told you that must have meant my dad, not me."
*Nobody called him Sir. Anyone who addressed him called him Master Liam or, if feeling especially formal, Master de Winter. And that was the servants up at the house. Cook's son, who was his age, called him Liam, as did the boy's group of friends who he played with in the village.*
