*Luciano Pavarotti sat himself comfortably in his large chair in his large apartment, quite pleased to be giving lessons again. He hoped Paris would turn out to be a great source of new talent, and he was glad to be the one tapping it. He nibbled on a croissant and drank some coffee while he waited.*

*Alex glanced uncertainly up at the number on the door, then glanced at the slip of paper in her hand. He hated to admit it, but she thought she might need some schooling. After all, how many prodigies could there possibly be in one city?
She rapped on Pavarotti's door and poked her head around.*
"I hear you're giving lessons."

*He smiled warmly, stood up, and walked over to Alex to shake his hand.*
"Si, signor. Are you interested in taking them? Me chiamo Maestro Luciano Pavarotti."

*Alex grinned at the genial giant and shook his hand.*
"Alex Abercrombie-O'Toole," *she said.* "It's a pleasure. And yes; I am."

*Luciano beamed.*
"Then please, sit down, ragazzo." *He said, motioning to a chair and taking a large one for himself.* "Please, tell me--what is your voice range?"

((Oh shoot. I've never thought about this before. I totally can't keep this up.))
*Alex sat.*
"Countertenor; what with modern opera and all, I've been taking the trouser roles from the girls."

*He smiled delightedly.*
"Buono, buono! I delight in working with countertenors, though the community at large does not seem to write many roles for them. Tell me, do you use a falsetto or natural head voice in your singing?"

*Alex tried to keep the blush from her cheeks. Damn fair skin.*
"Head voice, maestro. My voice is rather high. For a man."

*He smiled.*
"No, no, ragazzo. It is a good thing, no need to blush. Having to use falsetto is a sign that you aren't really a countertenor at all. Have you ever taken lessons before?"

*Alex thought about this. She'd been a girl at the time, and taking them as any decorous young thing did.*
"Yes, but I feel they were not rigorous enough to prepare me for an actual career on the stage," *she said truthfully.*

*Pavarotti nodded.*
"Si, si, I understand completely. And this is what you wish to use the lessons for? A career onstage?"

"Yes," *Alex said without hesitation.* "Most assuredly."

*He smiled.*
"Very good. How often would you like to have lessons? I charge a fee of (Insert reasonable price for time period here) per lesson."

*Alex quickly calculated what that would be next to her salary, which she didn't actually know.*
"Would twice a week suit? And... forgive me, sir, but you do have testimonials, don't you?"

"Si, on both accounts. I have letters from former pupils in a file somewhere..." *He bustled about the room, looking for the misplaced manila folder.*
"Ah! Here we are!" *He said, as he found it. He handed it to Alex.*
"And twice a week is just fine. No need to tire a voice now, is there? Nothing I hate more than a voice ruined by overwork."
