*Pavarotti smiled to himself--the boy was a true countertenor.*
"Si, si, very good. Have you ever seen this piece?"
*He asked, holding out "Che puro ciel" from Orfeo ed Euridice.*

*Alex smiled.*
"I've heard it. I haven't sung it before; but I'd love to."

*He grinned.*
"Come buono, I think the best songs to sing are those which one is only just learning." *He said, beginning to play the opening chords.* "It will be an exercise in sight-reading as well, then."

*Alex nodded, steeling herself to do her best. She was by no means perfect, but she kept up; and felt fairly confident that she'd attacked the song with something approaching technique.*

*Pavarotti nodded, listening intently, before walking over to Alex and taking his shoulders from behind, pulling them into a better position.*
"There. The sound comes out better that way." *He explained, not unkindly.* "And do not breathe with your ribcage--there is no space for air there. Your voice is good, but you are here to perfect it."

*Alex nodded, unconcerned by the criticism. She wasn't vain, and she was here to work.
She wanted there to be no question why she was at the Opera.*
"I can feel it," *she said.* "The control."

*Pavarotti smiled a little.*
"Si. Is like a balloon--you can't fill it at the top, and you can let it go slowly, control the noise, or you can let it fly all over the place."

"I see," *she said.* "Only, less squeaky."

*He laughed, and even though it wasn't one of his louder ones it was still a great booming sound.*
"Si, much less squeaky. Though I have heard some sopranos who seem to be competing."
*He listened to Alex sing for a while before stopping the piano gently.*
"You want the sound to come from behind your teeth, not back in the throat. The diction and clarity of sound is better this way."

*Alex nodded again. She seemed to be doing that a lot, but then again, he seemed to be right. She could hear it already, even if she couldn't fully control it.*
"I heard something once--about raising the soft palate. Is that related?"

"Somewhat. For now, just try singing from behind the teeth and with control. If it's too much to think about while singing, then just try the breath control first." *He explained.*

*Alex nodded and began singing again, using the lessons Pavarotti had taught. It was a bit much to remember all at once, but she did notice a difference. All in one lesson!*

**PAVS**
((And THATS cause he's a STUU!))
*Pavarotti thought for a moment after the song was finished.*
"Would you mind if we tested your range? It will be good to have an idea of it, and then we can discuss what you want to do with your voice, what you want to strengthen, et cetera."

"Of course," *she said. She followed his piano playing up and down, establishing that she was missing about half the tenor lower range and part of the upper mezzo.*

*He nodded.*
"So. Now that I have a general idea of your range, and where your break frem chest to head voice is, what is it you wish you accomplish with your voice?"
