Ramsey stepped forward and ran his hand over the horse's back and down her leg. "She seems fine," he said. "Perhaps an easy walk is all she needs."

*Madame Giry nodded, although she still looked concernedly at the mare.* "A good horsewoman always thinks of the well-being of her animal. I deserve no praise for what I did," *she said, biting her lip.*

"No," Ramsey replied, "I was commenting on your skill at riding."

"The horse does all the work, Monsieur. You place the talent in the wrong hands," *she said with a half-amused smile.*

"Then you have never seen an inept rider!" he replied with a laugh. "The horse responds to the rider, therefore it requires skill to manage a horse the way you did."

*Madame Giry opened her mouth to argue the point, then decided against it and accepted with good grace the compliment the strange young man seemed so determined to give.* "I have not seen many riders of any calibre, Monsieur."

Ramsey looked affronted. "Then your opinion of my riding skills is that they are low caliber?" He sighed and shook his head. "Such a shame. It seems I have been deceived for all these years."

*Madame Giry went pink with embarassment.* "I did not mean you, Monsieur! I only mean that I am personally lacking in trained taste when it comes to horsemanship."

*Madame Giry frowned slightly at the rather bold gesture he made in his hand on her shoulder. A feeling of trepidation rose over her and she shivered slightly, taking the mare's reins and continuing to walk along the shore.*

Ramsey continued to walk alongside her, idly toying with the reins in his hand. "What are you doing this evening?"

"I am in general rehearsal for the opera all afternoon, Monsieur. I usually conduct ballet-specific rehearsals of my own in the evenings," *she said unthinkingly, her mind much occupied by other thoughts, it seemed.*

"You've claimed that your girls are talented," he said with a cheeky grin. "Surely they will not miss your instruction for one evening."

"I am sure they would not, as I am known to be rather harsh with them. But what can you mean by all this, Monsieur?" *Madame Giry turned to consider the gentleman with a small frown of confusion at his strange interest in her schedule.*

Ramsey smiled. "I'd like to take you to dinner. And don't say no - even you must eat."
