She laughed, feeling only slightly embarrassed, and a little fuzzy from sleepiness and the warmth of having already curled up against him.
"Yes, it's funny, isn't it? When you and Dr. Richards came over Adrian was insisting I go home. He didn't want me to run off with the man I'd just met - which, I promptly did, after saying goodbye to you. I imagine if you had not come by the next morning and I had not made plans with you, our friendship wouldn't have progressed as it did, and when the inevitable happened with Raoul I wouldn't have anybody to turn to."

Curt smiled sadly, happy to feel her next to him.
"What a strange world we're living in. I almost didn't attend that night; I wasn't sure if I felt up to it, and then where would I be?"

"Didn't want to meet Adrian, I expect. He seems to have that affect on so many people who've known him."
Privately, Nina feared becoming truly her father's daughter one day. No matter what his faults, she wanted to be there for him herself to the end of his life, or hers, whichever came first.
"I could have found you eventually, you know. I'm sure if I told my father I wanted to see a geneticist, you would be foremost on his mind. What would that be like? If an old colleague's daughter called you... and you made an appointment with her? Would you ever-"
She cut herself off after a pause, realizing she was about to ask if he'd have developed feelings for her, realizing that was presumptuous.

"You're very observant," Curt said, smiling a bit sheepishly and hoping she couldn't perceive the twinge of pain this sent through him to acknowledge. "It's difficult to get back together with old friends, even if you parted on good terms. I can't say for certain what I would have done if we'd met differently... but I can't imagine many of the things I admire about you would have changed."

Nina tilted her head against his shoulder adoringly, looking right up at him.
"And those are?" she asked cheekily.

Curt stammered a bit.
"You're intelligent, you're-- compassionate-- you're very pretty."

She looked shining and radiant with very innocent happiness until the very very last word.
Nina looked a little flushed and rather subdued, almost hiding her face leaning against him. Then she looked up again, fairly sparkly-eyed, and when she spoke again her voice had dropped in volume.
"Oh... thank you, Curt."

"It's true. I hope I'm not making you uncomfortable--"

"No, not at all."
If they had been alone, oh, how she would have liked to make love to him right now...

Curt reached shyly to pat her knee.

She touched his arm with a slightly too intense grip for casual conversation, looking up and directly into his eyes hopelessly.

Curt looked at her with an expression of perfect heartache.

Nina felt a sudden pang.
And she wondered just as quickly if all of this reminded him of his ex-wife and released his arm, settling back against him with a sigh.

"He hasn't tried to contact you recently, has he?" Curt said, unsure if he should specify who.

"No, he hasn't," said Nina in a small voice. "I should give up hoping, shouldn't I?" She broke into uneasy laughter.
