Oh God, oh God. Curt laughed a little, glancing down at the spine of the book in his lap.
"Not quite -- it's ostensibly about spies, but, well..."

Nina laughed a little more loudly than intended, and not realizing her laughter was sweet she covered her mouth quickly.
"Spies, of course. What must the love-making scenes be like. I'm sure I have no idea."

"You'd be surprised! English spy stories are a little drab in comparison with the rest of Europe's, I suspect. Or American ones," he added, worried that was patronizing.

"Oh, drab? I'm so sorry for you and your unexciting plane ride."
Her hand slid just barely touching down his forearm, with warm fingertips intimately brushing the inside of his wrist, to briefly but gently squeeze his hand. With Curt only having the one the action seemed to have even more suggestive meaning than it would have with somebody else.

"Dour might be a better word. Certainly very gray."
His fingers tingled faintly. He tried not to think of other pastimes they might adopt were they alone.

"Certainly nothing like this book I've borrowed off you," said Nina with a growing fond smirk, not actually referring to genetics in this case.

His blond eyebrows shot up.
"I'm glad you're enjoying your reading."

"You must also enjoy this book very much, when you are bothering to open it for things you learned in grad school," she said cheekily.

"Well, yes, I haven't kept all my textbooks but there were a few that stood the test of time. A great deal's changed since then," Curt said, feeling unbelievably old.

Nina giggled somewhat to herself. He wasn't following, it didn't appear.
"What is her name? I don't suppose it's Martha."

"What? I'm afraid I don't follow," Curt said, coloring a little.

"The woman whose pretty photographs are in chapter seven," said Nina sweetly.

Curt went scarlet.
"Oh God, I'm terribly sorry, were there other-- documents--"
Which was a tactful way of saying it. He hoped to God there wasn't anything actually of Martha's in there -- not pictures, but letters, anything more mortifying than what there already was.

Nina dropped her voice low enough that one would have to be straining to hear them speak to overhear it and laughed a bit throatily, shaking her head. "Curt, you are the sweetest creature - putting pinup photos in a genetics textbook. It must have been an exhausting semester, eh?"

Curt shook his head, laughing quietly and direly.
"Oh God, you must think I'm awful. Those women must be old enough to be your mother by now. It was a less than engaging course--"
The material for the course had been good, pity it was poorly taught. And he'd been in a bit of a phase.
