"Shit."
Carefully, he picked her up and carried her upstairs, to her room.
"C'mon, Lois. Wake up."

*Minutes passed until she finally regained consciousness. She slowly opened her eyes. Despite the splitting headache, she tried to muster a smile.
*Frustration weighed down her already heavy heart as soon as she saw the concern etched on his face: why couldn't she just deal with this on her own? Why did she have to drag him into this?*

There was a flood of relief when she DID finally wake up.
"Lois...are you all right? What happened?"

*Lois forced herself to sit up and assessed herself. Her knuckles were sore from having clenched her fists so hard; there were indentations on her palms of her hands where her fingernails had dug in; and she was exhausted and felt sick to her stomach. But she decided to remain stoic.*
"I'm fine," *she said calmly, her voice hoarse from having screamed so loudly.* "It was just another dream."
*She tried her best to make it sound trivial.*

The concern didn't leave his face as he placed a hand on her arm.
"Are you sure...?"

*His hand on her arm was enough to break down her defenses. She began quietly, almost ashamed.*
"I would rather kill him than save my family. If it meant stopping him, I don't know what I wouldn't do. Things aren't black and white anymore; I can't see things clearly... and it scares me."

She sounded...almost like himself. It was unexpected, and it took him a moment before it clicked as to who she was talking about.
The Joker.
"If I knew where he was, I'd take him down." He said quietly.
"He's been doing damage in Paris recently, but he always seems to just disappear once it's over." He sighed.
He didn't know why the Joker was so damned hard to find, but he wasn't going to give up on it.

"No," *she insisted, reaching out and taking his hand.* "You're doing all you can. And I'm sure Batman is too..."
*She sighed deeply. They were her problems; dragging him into this wasn't fair.*
"Bruce, I think I should move to another wing."

If only Batman were more super-human. Then I'd actually be able to stop this misery.
He nodded, his expression still grim from thinking about the elusive Joker.
"This house is huge--you can have whatever room you want." He gave her hand a squeeze as he spoke.

"Somewhere you won't be able to hear me. Southeast wing? I don't know..." *she mumbled, a brief, mirthless laugh coming at the end.*

"Oh, c'mon, I like your company. And if this place gets any quieter I might go insane." He said, half-playful, half-serious. He did want her company.

"I need to do it for me," *she started slowly, taking back her hand.*
"It's kind of hard to walk past you in the halls everyday and just smile when all I want to do is kiss you."
*Lois forced herself to look at him, to keep what little bit of her defenses she still had. But she knew he'd see right through her feeble attempts. He always did.*

"Would kissing me be such a bad thing?" He said after a moment.

"Ask me," *she said, her whisper barely audible.*
"Ask me to kiss you."

Without any hesitation, he said--
"Would you kiss me?"
