*Everything was dark and tinted with a deep blue shade. Lois was in her home at the Ramstein air base and in a white night gown--the kind that she would normally never wear. Everything was where they should be but the entire house was quiet, too quiet.*
"Lucy?" *she calls out.* "Mom? Dad?"
*She slowly makes her way through the living room, around the coffee table and sofa and into the kitchen. The only place that had weapons she could get to. There was something wrong and she could feel it.*
"Aren't we a little too old to be playing hide-and-seek?"
*Quietly, she took one of the knives from the knife block and held it before her.*
"Hello?"
*Just like her paranoid father had taught her long ago, she stayed close to the walls and peaked into the dining room. There was nothing...*

There was nothing...but if she lowered her gaze, she would discover a disheveled mass of playing cards spread out across the plush carpet floor of the room; upon closer inspection, she would find, to her horror, that they were all Joker cards. Spray-painted over these cards in a glaring red shade were the words "HA HA HA".

*It wasn't until she set foot into the room that she noticed. She bent down and picked one up. She knew before she turned it over. Her heart sank and began thumping in her ear. Now she was torn between the need to see if her family was still in the house and the need to run for her life.
Lois held the knife out in front of her and made her way into the living room and towards the stairs.*

But he was there before her--leaning idly against the banister, polishing a knife with the edge of his purple sleeve. He looked up from his task and smiled, baring his teeth at Lois. "Surprise, surprise," he murmured, straightening his posture. "An old friend come to visit."
He lowered his gaze disdainfully to the knife in her hands.

*For some strange reason, she didn't jump. Instead, she turned around slowly and looked him straight in the eye.*
"Where's my family?" *she demanded, ignoring his glancing at the kitchen knife.*

"Tsk, tsk," he reprimanded, furrowing his brow. "You already know that the answer's not going to come that easily...don't you?" He lifted up high his knife to admire the subtle gleam that came off of its blade in the soft yellow light of a nearby lamp.
"And you've just used up one of your questions. Try again."

"I swear, if you did as much as touch them--"
*She broke off, knowing that her threats were empty. The fact that she had little to no control was driving her insane. Helplessness was an emotion rarely felt but when she did, it paralyzed her.*

He grinned at her through his thickly applied make-up and allowed his arms to drift back to their respective positions beside him. "There's only minutes left," he returned. "And you're going to have play my little game, if you want to save one of them."
The Joker cocked his head to one side inquiringly.
"So...what will it be?"

*Lois knew she wasn't going to play but she did have to make a decision: save a member of her family or get the Joker. She had always been a gambler but... this was different.
*There was a brief moment of stillness as countless thoughts raced through her head. She knew what had to happen.
*Then Lois lunged at him, the knife leading the motion.*

So, her decision had been made. Lois Lane thought she would barge ahead and take a chance. It was a fairly amusing thought, given that the Joker could never truly die in the minds of those in which he had taken root.
He hardly winced as the knife's blade penetrated through the cloth of his shirt and broke the surface of his skin, drawing startlingly crimson blood of a similar shade to his lipstick. He was human, at least, in physiological terms. "And when we bleed, we bleed the same," he directed at Lois, darting to one side and slashing one of her arms, in return.

*Her cry and wince were involuntary, but they only lasted for a split second. With all the adrenaline coursing through her veins, the cut ceased to hurt. She quickly swiped her knife across, aiming for his neck.*

His skin was only just grazed, a tiny cut left in the stead of where the tip of the blade had touched his neck. "Done, Lois? Is that all?" he inquired with a growl. "My turn." He proceeded to ruthlessly shove Lois through the hallway into the dimly lit kitchen and pushed her up against the refrigerator.
Seizing ahold of her hair, he opened and shut the refrigerator door against it...and broke off the handle, waving it mockingly before the girl prior to slamming it atop the appliance.

*Lois thrashed, trying to free herself, but it was futile. Her hair might have been caught but her hands weren't. She promptly back handed him across the face.*
"What do you want?" *she bit out through gritted teeth.*

"I've told you before what I wanted. Just a smile," he smirked, reeling slightly.

"Psycho son of a bitch--"
*She dropped her knife and attacked him again, this time trying to get his neck.*
