"I don't think so," he hissed. The Joker grasped both of Lois's wrists and pinned her arms against the refrigerator, its hum the only audible noise in the room besides their harsh breathing. He leaned into her to prevent any unnecessary movements on her part, his face only inches away from her own.
"Y'know what I really want to know?"

*His ghastly, red lips were right at the level of her eyes. He was far too close. Lois struggled, trying to put some distance between them, trying to regain control. But he had all the leverage and no matter how admirable her efforts were, he was far too strong. She made it a point to stay silent. There was no need to indulge him.*

The cold silence merely appeared to goad the man on. "See, I want to know how you'll...react when I show you a broken Bruce Wayne, beaten beyond recognition, on his knees, begging for mercy. At my mercy.
"And I'll break him...that's for sure."
He gave a quiet laugh and licked his lower lip.

"You can't your hands on the Batman so you're going to mess with Bruce? Seems like you're losing your touch," *she spat, her voice unsteady and quiet despite the vehemence she felt.*

He laughed, a sound tinged with the ragged shards of glass, and he pressed his face to hers to whisper gleefully in her ear. "But Lois, I am getting my hands on the Bat...I thought you, of all people, would know," he returned and pulled back to bare his teeth in a smile at Lois. He drew out his next words in a darker voice, revealing, with relish, in a single sentence the great secret he had been let in on. "The Batman and Bruce Wayne are one and the same, after all.
"And that way...I, uh, kill two birds with one stone. Much more efficient...wouldn't you agree?"

*Why did all of this sound so familiar?
*The situation didn't allow for her to be shocked or even confused. She felt numb, knowing that she should be feeling more but unable to.
*Lois struggled madly and sharply turned her head away from him, his closeness far too revolting for her not to. That was when she saw it on the kitchen counter. She felt her heart sink.
*She let out a deep, weary sigh. It seemed as if she had given up. She no longer struggled. Her hands were no longer balled into fists and she listlessly leaned her head against the refrigerator with her eyes closed.. Not much more than his vice-like grip on her wrists held her up.*

"Hmm," the Joker murmured under his breath, retaining his firm grasp upon Lois's wrists despite the fact that she slumped lethargically against him. He watched as her eyes fluttered shut and briefly wondered what images and memories flashed behind them. "Always surrendering...and at the climax of it all, too! C'mon, where's the fight in you?"
He shook Lois aggressively to an attempt to provoke her.

*Tears stood still on the rim of her eyes as Lois vainly willed them away. But his violent handling of her shook them free, sending them sliding down her face. She let them go. What else could she do?*
"You don't understand," *she said, her voice barely audible above the hum of the refrigerator. The faintest of smiles flickered across her lips, a brief and inexplicable moment of victory midst the apparent hopeless resignation to her fate.*
"I've won."
*It was ironic-- perhaps even comically so. She stood there at his mercy, cornered and helpless, and instead of begging for her life, Lois had just declared victory. But there was no conviction and absolutely no merit in her claim. Merely an airy pair of words now hung emptily in the space between them.*

"Victory!" the Joker cried, nearly doubling over in laughter. For a moment, he wondered whether his antics had finally driven the girl off of the edge into madness. "Victory, Lois, is only a word that people shout...until their next battle. And this war--" he gestured between the two of them, "--is far from over.
"So, you plan to stay so adamant to your bitter end? We'll soon remedy that."
He released his grasp upon the girl and began to rummage through the interior of his coat for a weapon that would suit the situation, humming as he did so. He trusted that the refrigerator would prevent Miss Lane from committing anything foolish, until the show began.

*But he was wrong.
There was a split second of relief as he let go. The object she had seen was a knife block. Immediately, she grabbed whichever knife that was in her reach and thrust it at him--*

Even for the Joker, the movement was far too deft, and he had hardly raised his gaze before the knife hit home, sinking into the area of his abdomen just beneath his heart--if he did happen to have one, that is. A bright scarlet plume rapidly diffused through the cloth of his shirt, and the man retreated a few steps, leaning heavily upon the kitchen counter for support. Lois's figure focused in and out of his suddenly bleary vision.
"Ah...I like them feisty," he growled. "You had some...fight left in you after all..."

*Lois hadn't moved. She stood there, watching him with horror in her eyes rather than relief. The knife was still in her hands; blood dripped off the tip of the knife, falling into a small pool on the tiled floor of the kitchen. She could do nothing else but watch and tremble.
It was done. She was free... Then why was she screaming--?*

Bruce had been awakened by Lois' scream, and he'd run downstairs to find her...lying on the floor.
"Lois!" He called, trying to wake her. "LOIS!"

*She didn't respond. She had sleep walked out of her room and was now lying in the center the marble floor of the foyer, senseless.*
