Alfred whistled a happy tune as he finished the dishes, he and one other maid were the only servants in the entire household.
And she was on leave for vacation to see her mother.
So it was up to Alfred to keep the place from falling apart.
He turned around and grabbed his tea and sipped on it, smiling and looking out the window.
It was unusually quiet outside and Alfred was taking it all in.

*Lois stood in the doorway and quietly knocked on the wall.*
"Is that Earl Grey I smell?" *she asked with a sweet grin that she always reserved specially for Alfred.*

"The only kind I drink Miss Lane" he took out another cup and poured her a cup.

*She sat down and took the cup of tea with a smile.*
"You're so English," *she said teasingly as she grabbed the sugar bowl and dropped sugar cube after sugar cube into her cup.*

Alfred made a face as she destroyed the tea with sugar but said nothing. "And I'm proud to be so" he sipped his tea again, looking out the window for quick second and then back to Lois. "How has your morning been?"

*Lois caught the look and grinned sheepishly.*
"I know, it's a miracle that I still have all my teeth," *she said before taking a sip.*
"Quiet. Quieter than usual. You? I don't think I've ever seen you just sit and stay seated for more than five minutes."

Alfred chuckled at her remark and set his tea down "This is because you are usually sleeping when I do. I don't think Master Bruce has ever seen me sit down in all my years here. Ask him, watch his eyes cross as he tries to remember."
He looked down at the floor, looking rather nostalgic for a moment before grabbing his tea and sitting down across from her at the table.
"The only person who's ever lived here that's ever saw me relax was Miss Jess, of course she didn't ever sleep much." It was then he realized what he said and quickly apologized.

*Lois blinked, confused at his apology. Her curiosity was piqued. But with the way Alfred spoke, she decided that not asking would be best. This was the first time she had heard about this Jess; Bruce never spoke of her so... it was either that bad or that insignificant. Either way, she figured she didn't need to-- more so that she shouldn't-- look into it.*
"I guess he and I both have bad luck when it comes to that stuff," *she said with a halfhearted grin.*

*Lois took another sip of her very sweet tea, hoping it would provide a suitable transition into another subject.*
"So... I know you're practically a jack of all trade but how do you manage all of this?" *she asked, referring to the entire mansion.* "I used to live in 300-square foot apartment and no matter how much I cleaned, the placed got messy."

"Practice Miss Lane, years and years of practice. That and the Wayne's weren't exactly messy people. It's really just a matter of dishes and dusting, you start at one end of the manor and move to the other, starting over the next week. Oh but you can't be all interested in that, it's terribly boring stuff" he waved his hand and stirred his tea.

*She propped her elbow on the table and put her chin in her hand.*
"You can never be boring, Alfred," *she said kindly. It was true. She adored him.*

"And you are far too kind" he smiled "but what could a old butler say that wasn't about cleaning?"
There's the time you spent in the MI-5, and the British Special Ops before that, oh and the acting! Alfred chuckled to himself.

"You know who you remind me of? My grandpa Gene. Which is weird because--" *Lois laughed at his memory.* "He was a sailor during World War II and he looked a bit like you-- tall with white hair and a friendly face-- but he had the dirtiest mouth ever. Cursing like a sailor isn't just an expression for me. Christmases with him were the best. He'd curse giving out everyone's presents. It was hilarious!"

Alfred laughed "Well I'm afraid the best you're going to get out of me is a couple bloody hell's and a bugger off or two."
