*Gambit wrinkled his nose.*
"I ain't no fan of this place. They ain' got no gumbo, for starters."
*Gambit stepped closer to Rogue.*
"An' secondly, it ain't right 'ere. This place, it isn' Paris in the past, it is somethin' else."

*Gambit gave a crooked grin.*
"Seems like wrongness is following us like a stray puppy, no?"

Rogue smiled softly, he seemed closer than he had before, maybe it was just her imagination "Quite."

***A NEW NIGHT***
Zero ambled up the spiraled stairs to the roof, where a soft, chilly breeze ruffled his hair in casual disorder. He gently fingered the trigger of the Bloody Rose, the handgun bestowed upon him by the headmaster of Cross Academy. Cross Academy had been the last place on earth that Zero had ever been able to truly call home.
He leaned his slender figure against a nearby statue and gazed out into the night with wistful eyes.
((Any takers?))

((Is it ok if I step in? If not, just ignore me.))
Dewshine had left Lorien as soon as she got out from the Elven hospital, where she had recovered after first being raped, then, because of the shame, spending a week without food and water. Her body had recovered, but her soul was wounded. Her spirit was broken.
She had walked all day, as in trance, not knowing or caring where she was going. This was how she had entered the Opera Garniere, and this was how she now was walking on the roof. The chilly breeze felt good against her skin, and ruffled her golden curls.
Dewshine suddenly noticed she was not alone. There was another person here, leaning against a nearby statue, gazing out in the night with wistful eyes. He was fingering some kind of weapon unknown among the elves. In spite of her fear of men, she came closer, looking curiously at the weapon.

((It's perfectly fine. )) Zero smelled the girl before he caught sight of her. He had long noticed that he could identify individuals who were not human simply by the aroma that they seemed to emanate. While these scents were neither malodorous nor pleasant, Zero felt they were rather invasive of a person's privacy; it labeled them human or alien without their conscious consent. Grimacing to himself, he wondered whether he also gave off such an aroma. Zero tightened his grip on the Bloody Rose and leapt to his feet. His body tensed in preparation for attack or defense, whichever would be necessary. "Who's there?"

((Thanks. It's been a while since Dewshine has played. )) Dewshine came over to him when he called out. She was a slender, young Elf girl with short hair. Her hair was golden and curly, and her beautiful eyes were bright blue. Her skin was fair, and the colors of her lips were light pink. She was not very tall, and her curves were not yet fully developed. She looked more like a child than a woman. And yet.... there was something frightened in her eyes, as if she had recently experienced something terrible. Something that had broken her spirit. Her light, melodic voice trembled a bit when she spoke.* "My name is Dewshine. I am an Elf, and belong to the tribe of the Wolfriders." *She looked up at him, hesitantly, before she collected her courage and asked.* "And who are you?"

No mark of the girl's quiet beauty passed unnoticed under Zero's impassive gaze, neither her golden hair nor the bright blue pools of her eyes. It dawned on him that he had trained his gun on her, but he did not lower it or make a move to do so. He was not entirely reassured of Dewshine's affiliation with the Elves.
"I'm Zero Kiriyuu, vampire hunter. Of Japan," he grunted. Zero thought it in everyone's best interest not to mention the fact that he was a vampire. His violet eyes flew to the muzzle of the Bloody Rose, and he swiftly returned it to his coat pocket; the slender silver chain connecting the gun to the lapel of of his coat clinked melodiously.
"It's just as well."
Zero knew too well that the bullets within the handgun would harm naught but a vampire.

*Dewshine blushed under the man's impassive gaze. After the brutal rape she had developed a fear of men, but since this man had still not tried to throw himself over her, she kept her cool. When she heard he was from Japan, she smiled and bowed gently, as she spoke the only Japanese word she knew.*
"Arrigato, monsieur Zero Kiriyuu. And welcome to Paris. Have you found a place to stay yet?"

Zero bowed in turn, pulling the corners of his mouth into a taut grin. Yet there was no trace of happiness in his eyes.
"Of course, Dewshine-san."
He had noted the quivering manner with which she addressed him and that shadow of fear that seemed to lurk within her eyes.
"Is something wrong?"

*She laughed bitterly. There was no trace of happiness in her eyes either. It hadn't been since the rape. She needed someone to talk to. And he was a stranger. But it didn't matter anymore.*
"Well. During the last few weeks I have been used as a houseslave for a bat-looking elf, been raped by him, spending a week in the forest without food and water, and been expelled from my family because of the rape they consider a disgrace towards the family."
*She looked up at him, her beautiful eyes filled with tears.*
"To tell the truth, monsieur Zero Kiriyuu, I came up here to die."

Zero's eyes widened in surprise. He cautiously laid a hand on her slight shoulder in an act of consolation.
"Why take your life when you still have reason to live, Dewshine-san? Surely, you would only become greater with everything you have been experienced. Now is not the time to break."
There was a cold pause, and then Zero hastily spat, "And of course, you can't hate yourself, like I do." An expression of scorn filled his face.

*Dewshine startled by his touch, and her tiny, slender body began to tremble with fear. There was a tiny hint of panic in her beautiful, blue eyes. Then she forced herself calm and looked up at him again. He had spoken with such bitterness in his voice. Her warm heart filled with compassion, and she heard herself talk to him in a soft, gentle, melodic voice.*
"Why do you hate yourself, monsieur Zero Kiriyuu?"

"I hate myself for who I am and what I am," Zero heard himself say.
Who could not?
Zero turned away from Dewshine to face the illumination of the city and the torpid darkness beyond. The wind tussled his hair about his angular face, hiding his glimmering violet eyes. Were those glimmers tears or were they merely a trick of the light?
"I wonder...what if I just shot myself here and now?"
Zero clenched the handle of the Bloody Rose so tightly that the blood drained from his knuckles.
