"The effect it has on public opinion, the potential for fascism and abuse, don't concern you then." She was a little harder than she meant to be because she didn't like being wrong, espcially not out of embarrassment.

"Of course it does" he replied just as matter-of-factly "there are people on this planet that have power to destroy everything."
There were too many villains to think otherwise. Additionally there were too many well meaning heroes.
"I can't fool myself in to thinking otherwise, I know damn well that absolute power corrupts. I'm willingly part of a machine that scares people, there's a reason the Keene act even came to be. But I still believe in the good of man, it's foolish optimism I know, but I can't live my life without it."
He meant the optimism but part of him meant the heroism.

She sipped her tea to avoid directly answering him. She didn't believe in the good of mankind, she didn't think, but she has believed for a time that well-meaning immoral actions could be more beneficial in the long run enough to warrant their undertaking. Morally, she was as bad or worse than Daniel was.
"I'm not judging you, you know, I'm sorry," she said quietly.

"I know" he smiled warmly "it's um actually nice to be challenged, it's part of the reason I'm with Adrian. I get comfortable with no one around to keep me on my toes. And there is nothing like a heated discussion."
He didn't want her to think her comments had upset him, because they hadn't. In fact they were a welcome change. He had to stay optimistic, it was a life or death kind of thing. He all ready had a negative personal view, he had to believe there were people out there better than him.

Well, that took her by surprise; Adrian had made Dan sound the opposite.
"Certainly no one could consider Adrian anything less than a challenge, at least," she said. Talking about their mutual boyfriend was safe territory at least.

He chuckled "That's for certain."
But he wasn't much better.

"He gave the impression that you were sort of...complacent, actually."

"Well I can be" he said with a shrug "I like to be challenged but <i>not all of the time</i>" he laughed "I do tend to kinda let things roll over me that's true and sometimes I can be too agreeable."
He thought about their doomed Greek vacation and sighed. But some good things came from rolling over "And I can be... over dramatic, melodramatic and his favorite word to describe me ridiculous" he smiled "that last part is because I like to see him smile."

"This is getting a little much," said Teja, not needing to know emotional details of their partnership or feeling that she should. "I'm sorry -"

Dan laughed and put his hands up in surrender "Don't worry about it, I get caught up" he wasn't at all offended or upset. He stood up and refilled his coffee with a smile and checked his watch, still plenty of time.
"If you'll excuse me a moment I need to finish getting ready, I've got wicked curly hair that is all ready threatening to come undone."

"Oh, do you- do you need me to go?"

"Absolutely not" he said with a smile "I'll only be a minute, an over shirt and a bow tie and I'm golden."

Not that his date would likely mind him as he was now. "You don't know when Adrian will be back, do you?" she asked, feeling like an imposition.

He stretched and looked at his watch "Soon, no matter how prompt he is, he's still at the mercy of rush house traffic."
He disappeared for a moment and combed down a few stray curls. In the bedroom he put on a blue button up shirt that matched his eyes, a black a blue striped bow tie and grabbed his jacket. He realized that since getting back in shape he was pressing at the seams of all of his clothes. He wasn't one to go shopping but he didn't have the patience or time to adjust every single piece of clothing that he had.
He came out and draped his coat over the chair he'd been sitting in and took a drink of his coffee, feeling slightly large in the button up.

"Maybe I should go," he said anxiously, checking her phone. "It can wait, probably."
What she meant was that she no longer wanted to tell him, but Daniel didn't need to know that.
