She blushed, which was mortifying, but smiled at him anyway.

"Do you at least want to get out of this coffee shop?"

"Honestly, we can go anywhere you want to go. I came here because you asked me to."

"Someone is going to catch on to who we are eventually," said Adrian, "so I think we had better go for now."

"If you had Loki's powers, you could just hide us," she said, as they stood; she put her hand in the crook of his arm. They looked, for all intents and purposes, like an absurdly tender couple of their median ages - Teja a youthful late-twenties, and Adrian a distinguished 35 or so - that had had a very quiet, intense conversation, and needed even greater privacy.

"Yes, well. You see, there's a reason why he's such a novelty around these parts..."
He put on his sunglasses as soon as they stepped into the sunlight and took a moment to make sure they were settled on the right part of his nose.

"Johannes had powers, he talked about it."

"Well, you've mastered everything else, Adrian, when are you going to learn magic?" she bothered him.

He looked down at her and laughed, though it quickly grew a little more subdued.
"Yes, like you."

"Oh, that," she said, quickly getting into half-remembered plans, and then finding she remembered more of them than she knew. They'd done so much research, or she had, about where to put people when their things were being taken, about what things they would be allowed to keep, how things would be distributed. And of course, the work that was to be had organizing these events would also serve two purposes - it would provide work for many and keep a whole lot of people focused on those details instead of the larger picture of their takeover. She wanted, she explained, for it to feel as much like the squabbles of daily life as possible to ensure that people adjusted as quickly as possible. It was to be full of people, not some gleaming scifi dystopia conducted by robots, assigning numbers to people.

"I don't know. The robots would probably be less corruptible," Adrian said darkly. "With very few exceptions, there would be very little concern about robots twisting the system in order to redirect confiscated property and funds to themselves."

"I didn't say no robots. But it wouldn't be entirely robots. And is one of your exceptions David? I feel like David is a little fond of funds."
