"I don't... care."

"God damn it," Loki muttered softly, and he didn't enjoy it at all this time.
"I don't want to leave you alone like this-"

She curled up in the chair, but didn't otherwise respond. She did desperately want to sleep, to get all of this out of her head.

He'd broken her.
God damn it, he'd broken her.
This was all his fault. He should never have entered the race, never craved this planet for his own, never dragged her into any of this. Every repair she had made to his battered sanity, she'd made by patching him with a little piece of hers, until finally the positions were reversed at last and it was Teja shuddering and clutching her head and sobbing while Loki looked on and felt his heart breaking.
Something had to give. If Loki could tear apart his own mind and given Teja back all of the steadiness and resilience and self-respect she'd given him, it would be worth being mad again.
Loki pulled her into his arms again and sat with Teja curled up on his chest like a frightened child.
"It's all right. You're safe now. I love you. There's nothing here to hurt you anymore."
Someone else had hurt her too.
"Stay with me. I'll protect you. I'll support you. You'll never have to work again- we'll leave this whole damned island. No one will need to know where you are-"

She couldn't do that, she couldn't skip town, he'd know, it would be so transparent and he would know and she would spend her whole entire life hiding because he would outlive her-
"Just... just get the pills."
She buried her head under her arms again.

"Promise me you won't hurt yourself while I'm gone," said Loki, after a long hesitation.

She lifted her head enough that her eyes showed, all the better to be confused at him with. "What?"

"Whatever happened- please, Teja, don't do anything to yourself while I'm away from here."

"I - ? I won't."

"Please," he repeated, kissing her forehead and lingering there for a moment.
He glanced backward at her one last time from the doorway and stepped out.
Loki returned a few minutes later- he'd obviously skipped the whole "walking to the drug store" part, but there was a shopping bag in his hand to show that he hadn't completely skipped normal procedures. He brought her the dose and some water to drink it down with.
"Here, darling."

She took it greedily, getting up too quickly from her chair afterward in her haste to go to bed and nearly falling over at a rush of dizziness; she caught herself and hurried into the room, shutting the door behind her as soon as she'd entered. She wanted to throw all these clothes in the hamper and change into something clean before she went to bed.

The intent had never been to wake her. When Loki crept in some time later, she had already changed, which made things easier.
He didn't much like the idea of having to use retrocognition on her clothes, but the girl was alarmingly taciturn and he feared the worst had happened.
Of course, retrocognition was hardly necessary when just picking up her bra turned up a huge bloodstain on the inside of one of the cups.
He stared, horrorstruck, at the bed, and rushed over to the bed to gingerly touch her hand.
She didn't burn, so she wasn't bitten, only drained.
"Oh, fuck me," he muttered.
Loki spent the next few hours anxiously smoking in the living room.

Teja woke up naturally fairly late in the evening, all her dread pressing on her mind but only from the back of it; she didn't feel calm so much as drained of blood and energy, but weariness was preferable to hysteria. She got up and dragged herself into the bathroom to shower.

By this point, Loki had managed to fall asleep sitting up himself.

It was a while before Teja came out, wearing a slip and patting her damp hair with a towel. The exhaustion hadn't passed with sleep much, probably on account of its origin in her exsanguination. She went to the fridge hopefully to see if he'd gotten her orange juice - which we had. She gratefully poured a glass and drank it down, before finally noticing Loki. He was asleep in a chair, his chin on his chest. A third of a clove cigarette sat in the ashtray, only it had become one long cylindrical ash.
She drifted over to him and sifted her fingers through his hair. "Hey," she whispered, urging him awake.
